The BC Summer Reading Club (BC SRC) is a free literacy program designed to engage children with a focus on ages 5-14. The program reaches more than 98,000 children and their families in over 200 BC communities in 2024, and is growing every year.

Position Summary

The Provincial Coordinator, BC SRC, provides leadership, planning, and coordination for the annual BC Summer Reading Club. Supervising an Assistant and working with the Core Committee, BCLA staff, the creative team, suppliers, and BC libraries, the Coordinator manages the overall budget, timelines, and communications, ensuring BC Libraries are well-equipped to deliver a fun and successful program. In addition to overseeing the annual program, the Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and shaping the strategic initiatives of the program and its future directions.

The Coordinator reports to the BCLA Executive Director.

Contract Term: Ideally starting in December 2024, this is an annual contract position for up to 325 hours (approximately 140 hours for administration and 185 hours for strategic and project work) with potential for additional hours and with approval of the Executive Director. Contract extension or renewal for additional years is based on grant funding.

Schedule: While some work will be required on weekdays during office hours (i.e. 9-5), BCLA strives to be flexible and the work schedule will be developed collaboratively with the BCLA Executive Director. In-person attendance at the annual BC Library Conference every spring is required.

Location: This is a distributed work contract (except for in-person attendance at the annual BC Library Conference). The successful candidate will provide their own equipment, home office and supplies, including a reliable high speed internet connection, and will supply and maintain their own computer. BCLA will provide access to an Office 365 account and all required software for the term of the contract.

Work Performed

  • Liaise with stakeholders, including BCLA, Ministry of Municipal Affairs (Public Libraries Branch), CUPE BC, InterLINK, BC Libraries Cooperative, BC Libraries, BC publishers, App Developer, and other organizations
  • Oversee and manage annual budget, including supervision of billing, and arrangement of contractors, in consultation with BCLA Manager and Executive Director
  • Lead the Core Committee in planning themes and overall materials design for the SRC
  • Lead the Core Committee in the selection of each year’s artist; commission the artist
  • Coordinate and facilitate feedback on artwork; communicate with artist
  • Arrange and coordinate meetings, both in person and online
  • Oversee and coordinate the production of Core Materials
  • Oversee and coordinate the design, sale and distribution of novelty materials
  • Conduct annual survey and evaluation of BC SRC in BC Libraries
  • Continue to refine, develop and evolve the BC SRC
  • Develop strategic planning initiatives and manage a long-term project plan that aligns with BC SRC’s goals and evolves the program
  • Write annual and interim reports for funders, in consultation with BCLA Executive Director
  • Communicate updates, timelines, news to BC libraries, including articles for YAACing and blog posts for the SRC staff site and social media accounts
  • Manage online records and files
  • Respond to enquiries from stakeholders, contractors, members of the public
  • Oversee, review and manage content for bcsrc.ca and app.bcsrc.ca for children, caregivers, and library staff
  • Lead the Core Committee in planning and delivering SRC promotion at the Conference booth
  • Plan and create SRC training material for library staff (such as workshops, conference sessions, etc.)
  • Apprise BCLA Executive Director of updates, developments and milestones
  • Supervise the BC SRC Provincial Assistant by overseeing their work and providing any required training and feedback

Required Skills/Experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong collaboration and leadership skills
  • Excellent organization and project management skills, including overseeing budget
  • Experience working in public libraries and children's services, including SRC programming
  • Experience with Office 365, WordPress, social media platforms, video conferencing, Canva, and other online tools
  • Ability to take initiative and make evidence-based decisions
  • Ability to work in a distributed organization with little or no direct supervision

Our Selection Process

  • We will review all applications starting November 18. We thank all candidates for their interest, but only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
  • We expect to conduct interviews via Zoom from November 25-28. Interview questions will be provided to each candidate 48 hours before their interview. All candidates will be asked the same questions and answers will evaluated against a rubric.
  • We will check references for the highest rated 1-3 candidates the following week and communicate our decision by December 6. Our decision will be communicated to everyone who was interviewed before any public announcements are made.
  • If our process is delayed at any stage, we will email candidates with an updated timeline.
