Prince Albert Public Library (PAPL) is looking for a Collections and Readers Advisory Librarian to assist us in informing, involving, and enriching the City of Prince Albert. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the successful applicant will be responsible for developing and maintaining the Library’s various collections and coordinating the work of the Acquisitions Department.

Overview of Duties:

  • Collections Development:
    • Responsible for maintaining the Library’s collection, following current selection policies, procedures, and general practices to ensure a well-rounded collection that meets the needs of the community.
    • Responsible for the selection and ordering of library materials in all formats.
    • Assessing developments at the provincial, regional and local library level as they affect Collections Development and the Library as a whole; and implementing new policies and procedures accordingly.
    • Generating and delegating weeding lists to the weeding team.
    • Generating and delegating Missing and Mending Search lists to staff.
    • Importing On-Order and Invoice MARC records to the ILS.
    • Generating monthly circulation statistics reports.
    • Advise on collections improvements and enhancements and their effects to the Deputy Director and assists with long-term planning for effective and efficient operation.
    • Conducting research to assess the needs of the community.
    • Evaluate and sort through donated materials.
  • Budget Management:
    • Develops the annual Collections Budget for review with administrators.
    • Responsible for managing the Collections Budget throughout the year and ensuring that all fund accounts are fully encumbered by fiscal year-end.
    • Communicating with SILS on troubleshooting and Fiscal Rollover.
  • Vendor Relations:
    • Maintaining communication between the Library and vendors.
    • Responsible for creating and maintaining Automatic Release Plans and Standing Orders with vendors.
    • Negotiate and troubleshoot with vendors as the need arises.
  • Readers Advisory:
    • Maintain and update the Readers Advisory section of the Library’s website by creating Digital Book Shelves and Book Scrollers.
    • Working with the Communication and Marketing Assistant to create social media posts to promote the collection and readers advisory.
    • Update and maintain Readers Advisory bulletin board display in the Teen Area.
    • Provide Readers Advisory while completing Reference Desk shifts.
  • Other Duties:
    • Coordination of the Acquisitions Department staff and their responsibilities; and monitoring performance.
    • Interviewing, recommending for hiring, developing training programs, creating related manuals, and training all new staff in the Acquisitions Department.
    • Communicates with colleagues and administration regularly to ensure awareness of and support for services and strategies.
    • Provides advanced reference service and bibliographic research.
    • Responsible for basic computer support.
    • Performs Building Administrator duties as required.
    • Performs other projects and duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Library and Information Sciences (or equivalent) degree from an ALA accredited program
  • Proven ability to accurately catalogue using MARC coding and AACR2/RDA principles; thorough knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification, standard subject cataloguing, and authority control.
  • Strong technical competence (ability to troubleshoot computer issues) and knowledge of electronic resources. Web design experience in Drupal preferred.
  • Good people skills; able to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Proven ability to provide courteous and friendly public service, and to handle all situations with resourcefulness and tact.
  • Proven ability to effectively instruct, organize, motivate and supervise staff.
  • Proven ability to organize time and activities, delegate tasks, meet deadlines, to work independently, and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Proven ability to accurately catalogue using MARC coding and AACR2/RDA principles; thorough knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification, standard subject cataloguing, and authority control.
  • Strong technical competence (ability to troubleshoot computer issues) and knowledge of electronic resources. Web design experience in Drupal preferred.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience with development and delivery of public programming
  • Specialized knowledge in a specific subject area (e.g., history, psychology, literature)
  • Supervisory experience, particularly in a unionized environment
  • Experience and/or training in automated library applications including acquisitions, cataloguing, and circulation
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience working with the Polaris ILS

Terms of appointment

This position is a full-time out-of-scope (non-union) opportunity. The standard work week is 37.5 hours, which includes evening and weekend shifts. There will be a six-month probationary period. The successful candidate will start with up to 22 vacation days per year.

Salary: $59,627.09 - $83,484.79 annually (commensurate with experience and qualifications, including benefits package and provincial Municipal Employees Pension Plan)
