Position Overview

The University of Victoria Libraries’ Transgender Archives Metadata Librarian is a two-year grant-funded position. The incumbent will report to the Head of Collections Management Services at UVic Libraries. They will work closely with the project’s Outreach and Ethics Coordinator to describe digitized and analogue material from UVic Libraries’ world-renowned Transgender collections, and will work in collaboration with the Director, Special Collections and University Archivist. They will work within an established ethical framework to create metadata for access, rights, and preservation. They may be required to assist the Outreach and Ethics Coordinator with community outreach to connect with individuals who were involved in the Trans+ activist movement from the 1970s to the early 2000s as well as other people who may be potentially affected by our project in regard to ethical considerations.

The Metadata Librarian will create metadata for digitized material and collections using international standards and thesauri (i.e. Dublin Core, Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus, Homosaurus) in combination with bespoke collection-specific schema and vocabularies. They will assist with organizing and naming digitized files as needed.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Creating metadata for individual digital objects both within a digital asset management system and using software such as Excel and OpenRefine
  • Defining and revising metadata application profiles for collections of digitized material from the Rikki Swin collection based on library and archival standards
  • Selecting appropriate vocabularies that will meet the unique descriptive needs of resources within the Rikki Swin collection
  • Working with the Outreach and Ethics Coordinator to determine the appropriate level of access and description for materials with sensitive content
  • Working with the Director, Special Collections and University Archivist as required for Transgender Archives history and context
  • May be required to produce (with the assistance of software) transcriptions of recordings
  • Organizing and naming of digital files
  • Any other related task that may be required

Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree (Master of Library and Information Science and/or Master of Archival Studies) from an accredited school of library science
  • Experience creating metadata for digitized material and collections using international standards and thesauri (i.e. Dublin Core, Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus)
  • Demonstrated familiarity with ethical issues related to gender and sexuality
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated superior attention to detail
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

Desirable Qualifications

  • Lived experience as a Trans+ or otherwise gender-diverse person
  • Experience applying library or archival metadata description to multimedia objects
  • Experience working with digital files and digitized content
  • Experience working with a digital asset management system
  • Experience working with Excel and/or OpenRefine
  • Experience using qualitative analysis tools (e.g. NVIVO, Taguette)
  • Experience using video and audio capture and editing tools

Salary and Benefits

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the level of Librarian II with an annual salary of $75,600.
