NVDPL is looking for Auxiliary Library Services Advisors to deliver basic reference, reader’s advisory, programming and borrowing services to a full range of library users.

Reporting to the local Branch Coordinator, this position will deliver both circulation and information services from service desks throughout the library. Service desk work at our Library requires a commitment to understanding and responding to community needs and a collaborative approach to service delivery.

What you’ll be doing

In addition to the primary tasks noted above, aspects of the role will also include:

  • Advising patrons on the most suitable programs, services and resources to meet their needs in person, online and over the phone
  • Using good judgement to hand-off advanced inquiries to a professional librarian to ensure the best possible service and response is provided
  • Assisting with collection maintenance tasks, program delivery and creating displays of materials
  • Assisting the Circulation team with library lending, returns and processing tasks
  • Performing opening and closing procedures
  • Packing and unpacking delivery boxes
  • Addressing problems with multi-function devices, and behavioural issues that arise in the public space

What you’ll need to succeed

  • Completion of a recognized diploma program in a service-related field, plus related training or experience
  • Ability to make customer service a top priority while using good judgement to apply library policies
  • Ability to take initiative, problem-solve and handle difficult interactions
  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of intellectual freedom and inclusiveness
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, technologies and equipment used in a library environment
  • Ability to balance patrons’ needs confidently and professionally in a busy public space
  • A commitment to service excellence, recognizing that the library serves members of the public from all walks of life
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work with the team and maintain working relationships with other employees
  • Physical capacity to handle heavy library materials and to stand for long periods
  • Ability to take initiative, ask for assistance, and step-up to help
  • An understanding that auxiliary workers need to have broad availability and flexibility in their schedules to fill shifts often at the last-minute, around major holidays, and that the number of hours offered may vary greatly from week to week

It’s great if you have

  • Experience working in circulation and/or information services in a public-facing role
  • A comfort level with uncertainty and are curious to learn more
  • An understanding that digital literacy is a component of library services and are comfortable handling technology devices such as tablets, netbooks, and eReaders

The hourly pay rate for this unionized position starts at $30.70, plus 12% in Lieu of Benefits. This work requires flexible availability, including evenings and weekend shifts.
