Director of Library Services
Fort St John Public Library (FSJPL) is in the largest city in Northeastern BC and serves a thriving community of over 34,000 people. We are currently seeking a forward thinking, enthusiastic and creative leader to join our team as the Director of Library Services. This position is full-time at 40 hours a week, Tuesday – Saturday.
Summary of responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Board of Trustees, the Director of Library Services develops, administers, supervises and coordinates the work of FSJPL staff; performs managerial duties related to library operations, strategic planning, budgeting, human resources, marketing, collection development, programs, and services in conformity with the policies established by the Board of Trustees. This position also serves as Secretary and advisor to the Board; compiles a broad array of reports and presentations; works collaboratively with community partners; liaises with municipal, regional and provincial governments; and represents FSJPL in the Northeast Library Federation.
Qualifications
We invite you to apply if you possess the following:
- MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited library program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a public library setting, including at least 3 years of leadership, supervisory and management experience;
- Ability to effectively manage and lead change;
- Ability to lead and empower employees to deliver effective, high-quality library services;
- Ability to identify and employ a range of management styles;
- Strong customer service orientation including a knowledge of best practices related to public service;
- Labour relations experience in a union setting, with an understanding of collective agreement bargaining;
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and a willingness to try new ideas;
- Superior communication skills, written, verbal and non-verbal;
- Clear understanding of modern library trends;
- Demonstrated budget management experience;
- An in-depth knowledge of integrated library systems, subscription databases, social media applications, and the wide variety of technology used by staff and patrons to access library services;
- Strong organizational skills, a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other staff and to deal pleasantly and tactfully with the public.
