Job Summary

The University of New Brunswick (UNB) Libraries invites applications from highly collaborative and student-focused librarians for a full-time, tenure-track Collections Strategy Librarian position to commence August 1, 2025, subject to final budgetary approval. UNB Libraries are staffed across two campuses by 24 Librarians and Archivists and 73 professional, technical, and support staff. This position is on site and based in the Hans W. Klohn Library on the UNB Saint John campus.

The salary range and fringe benefits for this position is defined in the Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers (AUNBT) 2022 - 2025 Collective Agreement sections 35 and 36B.

As a member of UNB Libraries, the incumbent will report to the Dean of Libraries with responsibilities overseen by the Director of Collections Strategy & Scholarly Communication and by the Head Librarian for the Saint John campus.

The Collections Strategy Librarian will work with colleagues to analyze and develop the library’s collection in all formats at the UNB Libraries. They will contribute to the management of multiple special collections, with responsibility for the Science Fiction & Fantasy Collection in the Hans W. Klohn Library. They will contribute as a key member of the UNB Libraries Collections Team and may be assigned to other teams and committees within the library and university.

The successful candidate will become the subject librarian for English, Philosophy, and Languages on the Saint John Campus, involving teaching, and engaging in research/reference consultations with students and faculty.

The librarian will be highly flexible, creative, able to innovate, adapt and thrive in a university environment undergoing significant transformation, strongly committed to advancing research and prepared to anticipate the changing needs of our students and faculty researchers.

Responsibility for the coordination and management of students, services, or projects may be required. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. The nature and scope of responsibilities for this and other library positions are expected to change as the UNB Libraries system evolves.

Key Responsibilities
•Develops and assesses library collections in all formats as assigned, employing criteria appropriate to academic libraries to ensure teaching, learning, and research needs are met.
•Manages, maintains, and develops multiple special collections, including the Science Fiction & Fantasy Collection in the Hans W. Klohn Library, and provides support to colleagues to develop other special collections, such as the New Brunswickana Collection.
•Completes reports describing library support and preparedness for new courses and programs.
•Maintains current expertise in research methods and tools, and in scholarly issues to be able to engage knowledgeably with researchers.
•Develops and delivers digital and information literacy instruction in a variety of learning approaches and modes.
•Collaboratively develops instructional curricular and course materials, including course-specific research guides.

• Delivers research and reference services in person and virtually, including in-depth consultations, to faculty and students.
• Contributes professional expertise in service activities that benefit the Libraries, the
University, professional / external communities through, for example: participating on teams,
committees, and other work groups; undertaking cooperative initiatives in partnership with
university colleagues; participating in training or teaching programs.
• Initiates and maintains contact with faculty in assigned disciplinary areas and programs of
study to ensure alignment and integration of library resources at a program and course level, to
contribute to the advancement of research, and the effective use of resources.
• Participates in professional development and research activities that advance professional growth
in areas relevant to responsibilities of the position.
• Demonstrates strong and effective leadership, including a commitment to equity, shared
responsibility, and accountability.
• Contributes to the goals and strategic initiatives of UNB Libraries.
• Contributes to a positive work environment within which people are motivated towards the
achievement of individual and/or group goals.

Required Qualifications
• MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
• A degree in a relevant discipline and/or relevant professional experience in an academic library.
• Understanding of, and interest in, current issues in academic librarianship, strong level of
knowledge in academic librarianship, especially in collections development, and in models for
library provision of research and instructional materials.
• Relevant experience with shifting trends in scholarly communication, including various models
of open access and the integration of some publication costs into library acquisitions spending.
• Familiarity with copyright laws and legislation, particularly as they apply to academic
publishing and teaching.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective educational and training sessions in
person, online, and asynchronously using current technology and teaching techniques.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver research services.
• Demonstrated skills in data analysis and the use of basic tools such as MS Excel.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, analytical skills, and the ability to
balance priorities and meet deadlines, to think creatively, and to take initiative.
• Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both orally and written.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, and to recognize and anticipate what needs to be done,
to manage deadlines, and to work well under pressure with discretion, tact, and good judgment.
• Flexibility, creativity, and ability to innovate and adapt positively in a continually
evolving environment.

 

Compensation

$88,502 - $139,762
