Job Summary
The Marketing & Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive marketing strategy to promote the library’s services, programs, and mission to the community. This role combines creative marketing expertise with library service, ensuring consistent branding and engagement across digital, print, and in-person channels. The coordinator will lead the library’s communications, social media, and other forms of marketing while occasionally assisting with circulation, reader’s advisory, and other public service duties.
- Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and implement an annual marketing plan aligned with the library’s strategic goals, including measurable objectives for outreach, engagement, and brand awareness.

Create and manage all marketing content, including social media channels, newsletters, press releases, copy for website updates, signage, and digital displays.

Expand the library’s digital presence through targeted campaigns, SEO, email marketing, and emerging platforms.

Oversee brand consistency across all materials, ensuring alignment with the library’s voice and mission.

Collaborate with staff to promote programs, collections, and services through creative campaigns (e.g., summer reading, new databases, community partnerships).

Track and analyze marketing metrics (social media insights, website traffic, event attendance) to refine strategies.

Manage relationships with external vendors (printers, designers, media outlets) and community partners for co-promotion.

Supervise and collaborate with the PT Marketing Assistant on projects and workflows.
- Library Service Duties

Provides exceptional customer service to library users
-
Provides readers advisory and assists library users in accessing the library’s print and electronic resources.

Provides basic instructions and assistance to users with the library’s public access technology, peripherals, devices, and networks.

Performs regular circulation duties including, but not limited to: the checking in and out of all library materials, the registering and updating of library user membership records, the collecting of overdue fines and other related library fees, the placing of reserves on requested materials, preparing reserve materials for distribution, answering telephone calls and ensuring that public use equipment is operational.

Records, tabulates and balances all revenues accruing from the circulation system, rentals, programs, and computer printing and forwards these revenues to the Branch Services Coordinator for deposit.

Ensures that branch materials are housed in good order on the shelves and may be required to assist in the deselection of library material collections.

Assists in the provision of adult and children’s/teen programs and/or the orderly operations of the public meeting rooms.

Performs duties as required at all service points.

Presides over the immediate effective and efficient operations of the branch when more senior staff is not on duty.

Assists in maintaining appearance of branches.

Takes responsibility for personal safety and health in the workplace and the safety and health of co-workers.

Must work in compliance with the law and safe work practices and guidelines.

Skills, Education, & Experience
Required
-
Two-year degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field (or equivalent experience).

2+ years of professional marketing experience, preferably in nonprofits, libraries, or community organizations.

Proficiency in social media management, graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Suite), and email marketing platforms (LibraryAware, Constant Contact).

Strong writing/editing skills with ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences.

Customer service experience (library, retail, or similar public-facing role).
Preferred

Knowledge of library operations, collections, and technologies (e.g., ILS systems).

Experience with budget management and vendor coordination.

Photography/videography skills for promotional content

Demonstrable experience in creating successful UGC campaigns.

Complexity, Consequences of Errors
The position involves a moderate‑level difficulty across a wide variety of tasks. It requires substantial judgment, analytical interpretation, and independent thinking, especially when delegating, planning and coordinating marketing initiatives.
Errors such as misinterpreting policies, creating poorly conceived campaigns, or mishandling service development can: Result in financial loss (e.g., wasted budgets, unnecessary vendor costs). Cause time loss (delayed projects, rework). Erode public confidence in the library’s ability to deliver efficient, effective services, potentially damaging the institution’s reputation and stakeholder trust.

Individual and groups of library users: patrons who receive services, attend programs, or interact with marketing communications.

Library staff: colleagues within the same branch (e.g., circulation, reference, IT) who collaborate on daily operations and marketing activities.

Public‑library staff and contacts from other libraries/organizations: external librarians, consortium members, community partners, and other agencies with which joint programs or cross‑promotions are coordinated.

Library suppliers and vendors associated with marketing and publicity: printers, graphic‑design firms, media outlets, advertising platforms, and any third‑party service providers supporting promotional efforts.
Working Conditions

Full-time (35 hours/week), including evenings/weekends

Must be able to work at multiple library locations and lift up to 35 lbs. (for displays/events).

Works in a computerized, non-smoking environment.

Work can be moderately stressful in meeting demands and internal deadlines associated with marketing campaigns and other planning, coordinating type functions of the position
