Position Summary
This position is responsible for the content management, cataloging, and metadata of the College library materials. The position evaluates, acquires, catalogs and provides access to a wide variety of published materials. It is also responsible for the development and care of collections of existing published materials and the assessment and acquisition of new materials.Duties & Responsibilities
- Processes and ensures access to all library materials through the accurate cataloging and classifying of materials according to library standards. Ensures access is accurate, up-to-date and operating correctly.
- Coordinates the collection of library materials including weeding, shifting and circulation changes.
- Coordinates with the technical librarian regarding acquisitions, cataloging, catalog maintenance, etc. to maintain and enhance access to all physical and electronic library materials.
- Recommends the acquisition of books, periodicals and audio-visual, interactive media and other materials for inclusion in library collection. Assesses donated materials to determine condition and appropriateness for addition to the College Library.
- Participates in the development of strategies for acquiring new library materials and in the planning and evaluation of library services.
- Responds to enquiries and provides general reference and information and research services to students, faculty and staff.
- Provides instruction in library research, the use of information research and information competency skills as well as in-library orientations. Provides training on cataloging standards and procedures to all library staff.
- Prepare bibliographies, indexes, reading lists, guides and other finding aids. Develop taxonomies using various information and data sources.
- Supervises assigned staff and participates in the recruitment, promotion, evaluation, training and development, and performance management of staff within the scope defined by College policy and the Collective Agreements.
- Performs other library-related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience- An A.L.A. accredited MLS/MLIS degree.
- At least two (2) years of recent specialized experience, knowledge and course work in library technical services activities and procedures including acquisitions, serials, processing and cataloguing
- Thorough knowledge of, and experience with, the content and formats of a wide variety of print and electronic information resources applicable to community college library services.

- Ability to perform cataloguing of all library materials using automated bibliographic databases, LC Classification, LCSH, AACRII cataloguing rules and MARC coding.
- Proven familiarity in using electronic reference and cataloguing tools and sources such as automated public catalogues, computers, CD-ROM products, remote databases, the Internet, online bibliographic utilities and Z39.50 protocols.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and staff, as well as IT staff, vendors and other ILS users and users’ groups.
- Ability to provide leadership to a technical services department team in a changing technological environment.
- Ability to work as an essential member of both the technical services department team as well as the Library Management Group.
Supplemental Information
The VCC Library is looking for a librarian to conduct original and revised cataloguing for a limited-term special project of 60-75 hours assisting in the indigenization of VCC Library's collection. The successful candidate would be responsible for proposing new subject classification for several hundred books currently housed in the LCC "E" section that better reflect the subject-matter of the material. In addition, the successful candidate would be responsible for providing a summary project report. Experience cataloguing Indigenous materials would be an asset. Schedule is flexible.
