Position: Collection Management Assistant
Status: Internship – 26 weeks
Start Date: August 4, 2026
Salary Range: $17.60 per hour
Home Location: Main Branch
Hours of Work: 24 hours per week including evening and weekends
Position Summary:
Milton Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Collection Management Assistant to join our Support Services team. This internship provides an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in library operations, collection development, and digitization projects. The successful candidate will assist in maintaining and enhancing MPL’s physical and digital collections, support local history initiatives, and contribute to digitization efforts to preserve community heritage.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support weeding and deselection projects to maintain a relevant and high-quality collection.
- Assist with collection analysis, including usage statistics and gap identification.
- Collaborate with staff on special projects, such as diversity audits and preservation initiatives.
- Support local history projects, including organizing and describing archival materials.
- Assist with digitization of historical documents, photographs, and other heritage resources.
- Review and audit the discovery layer to identify improvements in searching for series, book clubs, genres, and multilingual items.
- Assist in reviewing collection layouts and developing clear, user-friendly signage to enhance navigation and accessibility.
- Act as a note-taker during meetings with focus groups to capture feedback and insights for collection development and service improvements.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in Library and Information Science or related field.
- Effective writing and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with library systems is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent time management skills.
Work Environment:
- Unionized position as part of CUPE Local 4366
- Ability to bend and reach upper and lower shelves and lift items up to 10kg
- Works in a fast-paced environment
- Works as per the assigned schedule
Eligibility:
This position is funded by Young Canada Works (YCW). As such, all Candidates must meet YCW requirements as outlined below:
- Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada
Note: Non-Canadian students or graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible - Be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number)
- Be between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment
- Be registered as a high school, college, CEGEP or university student or be a graduate from college or university
