Job Summary
The Children’s Services Librarian is responsible for organizing and delivering Library programs for children and families. Programs are delivered as part of a coordinated effort of the internal working group known as the Outreach Team. Areas of focus include programs for children and families, building relationships with local schools and underserved communities, and incorporating the maker philosophy of creation and discovery into children’s programming.
This position acts as a liaison with various community groups, represent the Library at community events, and develop and maintain community relationships and partnerships. Under the direction of the CEO, they perform collection development duties in designated areas. This position will provide direct circulation, reference, and information services to the public on a limited basis.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees the day-to-day workflow of programming services, coordinating the planning and implementation of library programs for children and families, both in the library and out in the community. This includes running programs as well as the selection and evaluation of external program facilitators and volunteers, and children’s programming assistants, including summer programmers. Evaluates program success and conducts research to assist with library program planning and development.
- Develops and sustains strategic partnerships that expand access and impact; responsible for maintenance, updating and proposed expansion of partnerships with local groups. Promotes library services through outreach services, public speaking engagements and provides input on the design of marketing materials, and web content specific to children’s programs. Attends committee meetings and other functions as required.
- Performs collection development and maintenance for designated collections according to professional guidelines, community needs, and SPL budget. Monitors budgets and makes recommendations for planning. Promotes the collections to the public.
- Delivers reference, reader’s advisory, technological, and circulation services directly to the public on a limited basis. Resolves customer service problems and empowers public service staff to do the same.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining the safety and comfort of the Library during in-charge
shifts; reports issues and incidents to the appropriate personnel. - Participates in library committees and other work groups to achieve the goals of the
Library. - Regularly participates in training opportunities and maintains awareness of
developments in the field. Shares relevant developments with colleagues; suggests and
incorporates new ideas when able. - Other related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities Required
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and positively with the public.
- Excellent oral communication, presentation and writing skills.
- High level of motivation, initiative and responsibility.
- Proven experience in maker-themed program design, community-building projects, and direct public service.
- Computer competency, advanced technological literacy and knowledge of office software, generative AI tools and electronic resources used at a public library.
- Diplomatic and collaborative with strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work within teams and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to lift and carry containers of library equipment and materials up to 40 pounds.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Valid driver’s license (G class) and proof of clear driving record.
- A police check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening, is required and is a condition of employment.
Formal Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences or equivalent from a school accredited by the American Library Association. An appropriate combination of education and experience may be considered.At least 2 years of experience in a library setting.
