Job Summary
Situated at the University of Victoria Libraries and Art Collections, on the territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the university stands, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day, the Knowledge Translation Librarian (KTL) reports to the Director, Collections and Digital Infrastructure, working closely across library and art collection units and the university to enhance grant partnerships and the use and visibility of our rare and unique collections. In addition, the KTL has a leading role in UVic Libraries’ flagship, peer-reviewed, international, open access journal KULA: knowledge creation, dissemination, and preservation studies, and works in alignment with the Kula: Library Futures Academy to promote and articulate the evolution of the role of academic libraries and their impact on student and researcher success and broader society.
Duties and Responsibilities
Knowledge Translation (50%)
- Lead and coordinate the creation of library-initiated digital exhibits, surfacing our unique collections for research and engagement
- Conduct in-depth research to gain comprehensive knowledge of the scope and scholarly significance of rare and unique materials in the collections
- Working with the Head of Metadata, and with the Special Collections and University Archives unit, describe material from rare and unique collections using established library and archival standards and vocabularies to improve discoverability and usability
- Create standardized entity data in established entity databases (LCNAF, Wikidata, ISNI, etc.)
- Develop pathways to expose descriptive data about our collections within the global knowledge environment
- Help to create a vision for storytelling with collections and develop new approaches for mobilizing our rare and unique collections
- Working closely with the Libraries’ Advanced Research Services unit, coordinate support for the Libraries’ digital exhibit platforms, such as Spotlight and Omeka.
- Work collaboratively with the Digital Scholarship Specialist to support students and researchers with digital storytelling and knowledge translation, through course-embedded instruction, open workshops, and research consultations.
- Expand outreach and engagement to researchers and students on leveraging digital exhibits in their courses and research using library collections and infrastructure
- Oversee training and best practices for researchers and students on creating quality standardized metadata for digital exhibits
- May supervise students and staff to support these activities, as required
Managing Editor, KULA: knowledge creation, dissemination, and preservation studies (30%)
- Collaborate with the University Librarian (Founding Editor), the Kula Academy Director (Editor-in-Chief), and the journal board to provide intellectual leadership, policy & guideline development, and strategic direction for KULA: knowledge creation, dissemination, and preservation studies
- Serve as the operational manager for the journal including content recruitment, peer-review, layout, copyediting, and structural and stylistic editing for journal content; may supervise staff to support these activities
- Co-chair the KULA Journal Operational Group (KJOG)
- Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to build and maintain relationships with contributors, peer reviewers, board members, and supporters
- Coordinate with organizations providing hosting, production, and dissemination services (PKP, Erudit, Coalition Pública, Datapage, etc.)
- Participate in Canadian scholarly publishing professional organizations and activities
Grants (20%)
- Coordinate grant applications within Collections & Digital Infrastructure, such as those for large digitization projects, digital exhibits, and digital infrastructure
- Provide advice and guidance to UVic Libraries and Art Collections employees who are preparing funding applications
- Work with the Head, Advanced Research Services on letters of support for library in-kind support for UVic researcher grants and act as a secondary point of contact for UVic Grants Officers and the Office of Research Services
- Serve as a member of the Grants and Awards Operational Group (GAOG)
Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of library science, or a master’s or higher degree in another discipline with expertise and excellence in professional practice relevant to the position if the candidate agrees to complete an MLS from an accredited school of library science before the end of the probationary period (or the equivalent combination of education and experience in archival science in the case of an Archivist).
- Experience with online publishing platforms. Direct experience with exhibit platforms like Omeka and Spotlight strongly preferred.
- Extensive academic research and writing experience, including archival research.
- Experience creating standardized metadata in digital exhibit platforms.
- Knowledge of cataloguing and rare material descriptive standards and vocabularies (RDA, MARC21, BIBFRAME, DCRM, LCSH, LCC, OCLC-FAST, RBMS, etc.)
- Knowledge of archival descriptive and transmission standards (RAD, ISAD(G), EAD, RiC, etc.)
- Knowledge of entity creation standards and pathways (LCNAF, Wikidata, EAC-CPF, etc.)
- Demonstrable experience with media editing applications for images/audio/video.
- Experience developing and delivering instruction sessions and workshops.
- Demonstrable experience with the Open Journal Systems (OJS) publishing platform.
- Extensive experience reviewing, editing, and copyediting academic journal articles.
- Evidence of familiarity with major Canadian funding agencies and competitions
- Demonstrated track record of successful grant-writing experience, as well as experience with grants management and reporting
- Exceptional spoken and written English

Salary and Benefits
The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $104,000 - $127,000 at the Librarian II rank, and $115,000 - $142,000 at the Librarian III rank. Participates in Libraries and university committees, councils, task forces, and teams as appropriate. Keeps up to date with developments in digital scholarship in the profession and related fields and on broader issues that affect the practice of librarianship. Participates in professional organizations as appropriate. Undertakes research and engages in scholarship as appropriate.
