The New Tecumseth Public Library is seeking a people-oriented individual to work in all three Branches (Alliston, Tottenham and Beeton) as a Temporary Part-Time Library Technician.  The successful applicant will be required to work with a very high degree of accuracy, exercise tact and independent judgment in accordance with library policy and must possess demonstrated respect and appreciation for patrons of all ages.  It is anticipated that there will be opportunities for additional hours available from time to time, and that the applicant should be available to work at all three branches and have transportation to the same.

Requirements:

  • Excellent time management skills.
  • A library technician’s diploma is required.
  • A post-secondary degree in library sciences or similar field of study is considered an asset. Successful completion of a Reader’s Advisory and/or Reference Service course from a recognized program is considered an asset.
  • Two (2) years prior working experience in a library is required.
  • Experience in a library and familiarity with integrated library systems, public service, and/or a retail environment is considered an asset.
  • Intermediate to advanced technology and computer skills, including knowledge of collections, electronic databases, and reference sources. Comfortable learning new technology (i.e., online searching, library tools/software, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills (including reading, writing, listening, and speaking), including a demonstrated excellence in customer service.

Duties:

  • Provide reference (i.e., research, local history, genealogy, tech assists, etc.), information, and advisory services (i.e., book recommendations using verified resources, reader’s advisory and book club set lists) at designated service points (i.e, staff desks outside staff areas, computers, self-checkout machine, IdeaLab, etc.) and while roaming
  • Monitor shelving and shelf reading duties as well as the operation of the circulation desk, including the cash register (i.e., handling of fines, photocopying, book sales, donations, etc.)
  • Perform interlibrary loan (ILLO) responsibilities such as searching and locating patron requests for online ILLO operations. Perform other ILLO duties as directed
  • Perform collection development duties such as weeding and recommendations for purchase as directed by Technical Services staff and/or Management
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for the library branches
  • Handle user complaints with referral to manager as necessary
  • Provide guidance and training to staff as directed by Management
  • Travel between branches, as duties may be assigned at any library branch
  • Provide relief as required for any shift in any location
  • Perform occasional additional duties as may be assigned

Wage Rate:   $ 31.74 per hour.

Hours of Work:  Up to an average of 27 hours per week.  Hours and location are subject to change at any time.

Base Location:  Alliston Memorial Branch (Alliston)
