Surrey Libraries invites applications for the position of Casual Public Services Assistant. The Public Services Assistant performs a variety of duties related to providing exceptional customer service to maintain efficient, welcoming and inclusive library operations. This position reports to the Manager, Circulation Services.

Hours of work vary and availability to work evenings, weekends and peak vacation times is required (spring break, summer break, winter break and the days preceding/ following statutory holidays). This is an on-call casual position, working up to 35 hours per week. Applicants must be willing to travel to all 10 branches.

Start date: February 2025

Main Responsibilities and Duties

  • Answers general queries in the branch or community, assisting the public at the point of contact.
  • Checks library materials in and out of the system, including using automated tools. Sorts, shelves and cleans library materials.
  • Deals with member queries, completes registrations and resolves issues relating to accounts, programs and events.
  • Collects and records payments of fees and fines.
  • Answers basic information services, basic readers’ advisory, and other inquiries.
  • Handles incoming and outgoing materials.
  • Locates and retrieves materials, such as holds and traces.
  • Assists with use of and access to library resources, equipment and technologies.Performs minor troubleshooting.
  • Participates in collection maintenance duties, e.g. shelf reading, processing and discards.
  • Assists in preparing a variety of visual media e.g., displays, signage, etc. and in promoting library services, initiatives and merchandise.
  • Assists with tasks related to program setup, takedown and delivery.
  • Keeps library in neat and orderly condition.
  • Performs other related duties.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Keyboarding speed of 35 words per minute.
  • Excellent customer service, problem solving, spoken and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of library resources and collections, as related to the work performed.
  • Ability to work positively, with flexibility, initiative and accountability in a challenging environment.
  • Other skills include knowledge of computer hardware and software applications, and online resources.
  • The ability to meet the physical demands of the work including safe handling of materials.
  • Ability to learn new skills with a commitment to continuous development.
  • Oral fluency in another language is an asset.

Rate of pay: $30.37 - $31.34 per hour.
