Position Title: Communications and Events Lead

Location: Bob Prittie Metrotown Library

Status: Temporary Full-Time (Approximately 12 months)

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Communications and Events Lead who will be responsible for helping with the library’s public communications and large public event coordination. The successful candidate will join a small, collaborative team of Public Engagement & Awareness staff responsible for overseeing, strategizing, designing and producing content for the library’s multiple marketing and communications channels and platforms. The position reports to the Coordinator, Public Engagement & Awareness.

Since April 2020, the focus of this position has shifted from closely supporting children’s and teen services including program and pop-up coordination, to providing communications support for library-wide services, programming and events. As part of BPL’s 2024 Operating Plan projects, the position will take a leading role with planning and coordinating large cultural events at BPL. The successful candidate will bring principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism to their work.

This is a temporary full-time position for a duration of approximately 12 months with the possibility of extension.

Duties:

  • Creates written communications and content for the library’s website, promotional materials, marketing campaigns, publications, news releases.
  • Plans, creates and curates content for social media channels; assists with developing campaigns as needed; monitors the library’s accounts; responds to messages, comments, and complaints.
  • Liaises with staff to coordinate, create, and advise on content creation and structure for print and online channels.
  • Maintains library updates to the website, socials, and other online platforms.
  • Acts as library liaison with external and internal translation services; prepares copy for translation.
  • Assists with communications during emergencies and other urgent events when needed.
  • Advises on usability and content design issues for public and internal communications.
  • Coordinates, plans and supports large community events.
  • Coordinates pop-up equipment and giveaways for use by staff at library programs and events.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 education with some additional training, plus related library work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • A broad understanding of communication and user experience best practices including plain language principles and accessibility.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent writing skills that can be adapted to channel, audience and situation.
  • Sound judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with event planning and coordination.
  • Demonstrated commitment to applying principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism to the work.
  • Salary: $31.97 hourly with 1.5% special benefits after 6 months of continuous employment per CUPE Local 23 Collective Agreement

    Hours: 70 hours biweekly. Evening and weekend work will be required. The 9-day fortnight work schedule (work 7.77 hours for 9 days and have the 10th day off) for this position is listed below.

    Week 1: Monday – Thursday 8:30-5:15, Friday/Saturday/Sunday OFF

    Week 2: Monday – Friday 8:30-5:15, Saturday/Sunday OFF

    Schedules are subject to change to meet operational needs. All staff may be asked to work in other locations at any time.
