The Whitby Public Library (WPL) is currently seeking a motivated, committed and solution-focused leader to fill the position of Director, Community and Service Development. This position offers the opportunity to work in an evolving and successful library system, to further develop the Library’s public services in a collaborative work environment.

The Director, Community and Service Development directs the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services. They build internal and external support for WPL’s mission and vision, ensuring that employees understand strategic directions and goals and that key objectives are achieved and meet community needs.

As a key member of the senior management team, the Director, Community and Service Development oversees WPL’s public services staff and activities and plays a key role in advancing WPL’s strategic priorities. Reporting to the Chief Librarian/CEO, they seek innovative and effective ways to continuously improve service quality and maximize effectiveness. The Director has several managers who report to them and serves as a key member of community and library-led committees and initiatives. Directors attend monthly Library Board meetings and act as senior advisors to the CEO.

The ideal candidate is passionate about libraries and community and will work collaboratively with internal and external customers and partners. Their strong leadership skills will motivate, mentor and coach managers and staff. They possess exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills, the ability to influence others, build beneficial relationships and manage change. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organizational skills and can balance multiple projects and priorities. They must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrate initiative and flexibility.

The Director will model a strong customer service ethic, and focus on assessing, anticipating and responding to community needs. They are results-driven with a record of achieving strategic outcomes in a timely manner. The ideal candidate possesses a comprehensive knowledge of library resources and services and the ability to work with attention to detail. They are dedicated to continuous learning, possess excellent technology skills and a demonstrated ability to stay abreast of emerging trends. The Director identifies and builds relationships within Ontario’s public library sector, the local community and the municipal environment.

Compensation

  • $118,516-$139,431 – 2024 rate (under review)
  • OMERS pension plan
  • Competitive benefits, including health and dental
  • Permanent Exempt Full-time, 35 hours per week
  • May work evenings and weekends
  • Eligible for hybrid work arrangement

Education and Experience

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library program, or comparable combination of relevant education and experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience, including 3 years’ experience in a leadership role
  • Experience working in a library, non-profit or public service setting is an asset
  • Supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment, that demonstrates the ability to select, train, motivate, and lead teams in a collaborative work environment.
