CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides proactive customer service to users of the Makerspace and other technologies throughout the Library.
  • Assists patrons of all ages in using tools, equipment, material and software in the Makerspace; offers patrons one-on-one instruction and training on Makerspace resources, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC and vinyl cutting, sewing, electronics, green screen and sound booth technologies.
  • Develops and maintains product knowledge regarding tools, equipment, materials and software for specific projects in order to meet the needs of patrons in the Makerspace.
  • Develops and conducts Makerspace and technology related programs, workshops, presentations, projects & events for all ages. Create and submit program proposals to the Manager of Community Engagement & Programming quarterly basis.
  • Maintains local, regional and national connections in the Maker Movement while providing information and expertise in the same networks.
  • Works to develop the Library’s Makerspace room into a state-of-the-art technology and creativity section, including setting up tools and equipment, training select staff members, and creating safety procedures for the tools and Makerspace.
  • Leads the management of the Makerspace, coordinating tools, equipment, material and software, program and outreach and the public service schedule.
  • Works with the Management Team to schedule open public service coverage in the Makerspace.
  • Partners with internal stakeholders to identify development opportunities; attends training and conferences; applies knowledge gained in training and development activities.
  • Provides support and coverage for coworkers as needed. Including participation in committees to support system wide strategic objectives.
  • Staff a public service desk providing readers’ advisory and reference service to Library patrons, as needed.
  • Deliver presentations to showcase the Makerspace services to the community.
  • Manages the makerspace booking system, updates website content for the booking system, and responds to inquiries.
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment and instruments in accordance with prescribed requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required to support library operations.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Library Technician’s diploma or bachelor’s degree in arts, design, technology, or related field. Substantial relevant experience may be considered in place of formal education.
  • Experience working/familiarity with the operation and processes involved with 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, etc., in a lab or educational setting is highly desirable.
  • Robust technology skills.
  • Strong knowledge of emerging trends, new technologies and advancements in technologies that can be utilized in a Library setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, presentations and correspondence preparations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, administrative, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, research and time management skills.
  • High level of attention to detail and ability to work independently and under pressure.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • A proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and interact professionally with the public, Town officials, Board members and staff members.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Ability to provide an acceptable current criminal reference check.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Fluent English language skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, public relations, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated with a professional attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Requirement for sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office/library setting.
  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Required to view a computer screen for long periods of time.
  • Ability to routinely lift and move shipments in boxes up to 20 kg.
  • Ability to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
  • Work is conducted in close proximity to staff-used printer/fax/copier with frequent exposure to paper fibres and dust.

HOURS OF WORK:

Full-time: 35 hours per week. Shift work, evening and weekends will be required.

REPORTS TO: Manager of Community Engagement & Programming

HOURS AND COMPENSATION:

Compensation: $27.75 - $32.46 per hour, commensurate with education & experience. (under review)

Total hours: FT, 35 hours per week. Schedules may vary. Evenings and weekend work will be required on rotation. The position includes participation in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan and a benefits package upon completion of probation, including paid vacation time.

Occupational Health and Safety awareness training from the Ministry of Labour and WHMIS training will be required. A current criminal record check, with vulnerable sector clearance will also be required for the successful candidate.
