Community Engagement Librarian – Local History

Niagara Falls Public Library

Permanent, Full-Time

The Niagara Falls Public Library is seeking a Local History Librarian to oversee all aspects of Local History services, collections and programs and builds relationships with the local heritage, historical, and cultural communities to ensure coordinated efforts.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in library science, with a specialization in archival work and local history research. The Local History Librarian will play a pivotal role in preserving, organizing, and promoting our community's rich history through various programs, exhibits, and outreach efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implements all activities related to the Niagara Falls Public Library's local history service, collections and programs.
  • Implements community engagement partnership work with community groups connected with local history.
  • Makes presentations and represents the Library at various City and Region-wide community committees that are focused on historical and cultural initiatives. These committees may include (but are not limited to) Public Art initiatives, milestone celebrations, and historical community events.
  • Coordinates acquisition, curation and indexing of newspapers articles, historical images, artwork, and local history books.
  • Coordinates Local History reference service both in person and online, as requested.
  • Manages the Local History collection’s photo permissions, documentation and invoicing.
  • Oversees the curation of the Historical Images database including content addition and indexing.
  • Develops and coordinates local history displays.
  • Develops and coordinates innovative local history programs - in-person, virtual and website based.
  • Participates in the budget process to ensure adequacy of resources to execute objectives and monitors assigned budgets.
  • Seeks out and administers grant funding opportunities.
  • Recruits and supervises staff and volunteers to assist with indexing and entering local history materials into the databases.




  • Stays abreast of professional and community knowledge, in order to enhance services and the Library's community role.
  • Attends and participates in Board and Board Committee meetings as required.
  • Monitors assigned budgets.
  • Collaborates with management teams and staff to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of system-wide library services, in order to fulfill the Library's strategic objectives.
  • Participates in and contributes towards library committees, meetings, and events.
  • Manages the effective performance of all staff directly or indirectly supervised.
  • Prepares statistics and reports as required.
  • Shares accountability for ensuring a safe and respectful workplace.
  • Provides back-up public services as required.
  • Other duties consistent with job responsibilities.
  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent qualification.
  • 1 years' relevant experience in a branch of a Large or Medium Public Library or similar public sector organization.
  • Valid G-class License and access to a vehicle.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with data from various sources and in various formats.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with current technology.

Expected Start Date:

Wage:

$44.56 - $52.13 per hour

Work Hours:

35 hours per week (includes days, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays).
