North Vancouver City Library is seeking an enthusiastic, service-oriented Adult Summer Reading Club Assistant (Library Technician) to temporarily join our team full-time (May 23 – August 31, 2024). This term may be extended by mutual agreement or cancelled by the library at any time on two weeks’ notice.

This position requires a passion for reading and the ability to promote literacy to a diverse community of adults. The position will be responsible for collaborating with professional and para-professional staff in the development and delivery of a summer reading club initiative for adults.

The Adult Summer Reading Club Assistant will:

  • Participate in the research and development of a summer reading club for adults;
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver programs and events for adults in support of the adult summer reading program;
  • Connect with community organizations to deliver partnership programs;
  • With support from the library’s Communications staff, enthusiastically promote summer reading in the library and the community; and
  • Deliver information services, including reference, reader’s advisory and technology support, for people of all ages and backgrounds at all library service points.

The successful candidate will have some familiarity with the community-led libraries model and current trends in public library services. A passion for reading with a strong knowledge of adult reading choices, including an interest in diverse authors, genres, and emerging formats would be an asset. Experience with the delivery of services to a diverse community of adults is desirable.

Qualifications

You must have good general knowledge and the ability to provide library services, particularly reader’s advisory, and also account services, technology assistance, referral service and literacy-based programming.

Tuesday – 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday – 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Thursday – 1:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Friday – 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Saturday – 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Schedules are reviewed periodically and subject to change. Exact scheduling will depend on community events and may include evenings.

LIBRARY TECHNICIAN

1.Nature and Scope of Work

This is paraprofessional library work involving responsibility for providing information and reader’s advisory services, program delivery, and technical services to the public.An incumbent of this class assists the public in the use of a wide variety of internal and external source material and bibliographic tools. An incumbent also performs copy cataloguing of library materials and original cataloguing for materials not found in bibliographic databases, updates and maintains library holding records, and maintains awareness of trends and developments in public library service.Considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised within established guidelines while more difficult or matters of policy are referred to a superior who reviews work performance in terms of effective delivery of service and conformance to prescribed standards and practices.

2.Illustrative Examples of Work

Delivers reference and readers’ advisory service at information desks, by telephone and by email; assists customers in locating, selecting, accessing and using resources in the library, online, and through other libraries; assists customers in conducting research using a variety of resources, including online resources; refers customers to other agencies or specialized staff as appropriate; refers complex enquiries to professional staff.

Explains and answers questions about library policies, services and collections; receives, responds to and refers customer suggestions and complaints; maintains good customer relations.

Prepares and delivers programs, including children’s programs, digital literacy programs and adult programs using established guidelines or under the guidance of a librarian; leads tours; participates in outreach activities to inform customers about the library and its services.

Demonstrates, orients and provides instruction and assistance in using library technology and online resources including the library website, online catalogue, downloadable and streaming digital content and mobile apps; assists customers with use of self-service checkout machines, copiers, printers, self-service payment, other library equipment and in using personal devices to access library applications, tools and resources.

Troubleshoots routine hardware and software problems on public computers; assists customers with logging on, connecting to WiFi, printing, accessing applications or related tasks; checks terminals, keyboards or mouse connections and restores same if unattached; performs other basic hardware checks and adjustments as required.

Develops and maintains displays, booklists and other advisory resources.

Records and maintains various statistics.

Receives and responds to requests for library materials, selects and enters orders for materials, reviews and deselects materials in accordance with established guidelines.

Participates in library opening and closing procedures; ensures that the service desks are well stocked, well organized and presentable to the public.

Performs copy cataloguing of library materials using local cataloguing standards, procedures and practices and the current international cataloguing rules; searches database for bibliographic records; selects appropriate record, edits same and downloads revised record into local database.

Performs original cataloguing for selected materials not found in bibliographic databases; searches references using ISBN, Library of Congress Number, author or title, creates records using established formats according to type of material being processed.

In accordance with established procedures, enters, updates and maintains library holdings records, identifies and corrects known record errors, and performs routine database clean up tasks.

Receives library materials from vendor, checks for processing errors, reviews bibliographic and holdings records and makes necessary revisions.

Maintains awareness of trends and developments in public library service; participates in training and development to maintain and expand reference, reader’s advisory, technology and technical skills.

Performs registration and account services tasks such as welcoming new customers to the library, registering and orienting new customers, providing information and assistance on matters and enquiries related to customers’ records and lending policies and regulations, receiving and processing payments, resolving issues with customer accounts, following up and resolving issues with problem or damaged items as required.

Performs related work as required.

3.Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Considerable knowledge of library methods, procedures and tools applicable to the work.

Sound knowledge of the objectives, organization, procedures, services, resources and operations of the library.

Sound knowledge of basic troubleshooting practices for hardware and software problems.

Sound knowledge of MARC system coding, local cataloguing standards, procedures and practices and current international cataloguing rules as related to the work performed.

Ability to provide readers’ advisory and reference services, assisting the public in the selection, location and use of a wide variety of internal and external source material and bibliographic tools.

Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public, provide information, and interpret and explain library policies and regulations; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Ability to carry out derivative and non-complex original cataloguing of specific library material under general supervision.

Ability to prepare, develop and present a variety of library programs.

Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records and files related to the work.

Ability to operate standard office equipment and use software related to the work.

4.Desirable Training and Experience

Completion of an approved Library Technician diploma program including relevant courses, plus some customer service or library experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
