Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for a 1-year term position of Research Data Librarian. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries, Digital Strategy, the incumbent will join two other librarians working in this area and play an important part in the Library’s RDM (Research Data Management) services.

  • Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Libraries, Digital Strategy, and in collaboration with members of the Data Services team, provide research data services to researchers through consultations and workshops;
  • Assist in the development of institutional policies and procedures related to research data management;
  • Work with users to devise and implement strategies for long-term data curation;
  • Assist researchers with writing data management plans;
  • Work with colleagues in the Library and across related campus research units to educate SFU researchers about data management best practices and funder and/or publisher requirements;
  • Encourage informed data deposit in appropriate research data repositories or disciplinary platforms;
  • Mentor colleagues through training and development;
  • Hire, supervise, and mentor a group of graduate student employees in the planning and delivery of workshops as well as individual consultations through the Research Commons, on specific research programming tools and open science (e.g., R, Python, Git);
  • Collaborate with librarians in regular communication and review of services to departments and faculties;
  • Maintain a collection of Library web guides that serve as a brief introduction to research data management;
  • Liaise with Library Systems staff regarding technical support for RDM platforms;
  • Work with library staff on project teams and committees;
  • Maintain currency with developments and best practices in the profession and in the fields of research data management, and participate in relevant professional associations, conferences, workshops and other events;
  • Advance the values and goals outlined in the Library’s Strategic Plan.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Master's degree in Library or Information Studies from an ALA accredited program, or its equivalent;
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds;
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both orally and written.


  • Second advanced degree in a data-intensive discipline;
  • Experience working in RDM, data services, digitization, digital curation or digital preservation;
  • Experience with developing or working with data management plans;
  • Experience with the research and publishing workflows and lifecycles;
  • Experience with platforms used to manage research data, e.g. FRDR, Dataverse, Islandora.
  • Experience organizing workshops and supervising graduate student instructors.


This is a full time 1-year Librarian position, beginning August 11, 2020.
