Perth & District Union Public Library in Perth, Ontario, is seeking an interim CEO/Chief Librarian to cover a maternity leave from October 28, 2019 – September 11, 2020.

About the library

Perth & District Union Public Library serves a population of 19,000 people in the Town of Perth and the surrounding townships of Drummond/North Elmsley and Tay Valley. The library has a budget of about $650,000 and a staff of 12. Known for its creative programs and services and strong community connections, the library was the 2014 winner of the Angus Mowat Award of Excellence from the Government of Ontario and is an Accredited Ontario Public Library. Library programs and services reflect a mix of tradition and innovation, including long-standing literacy programs, a digital media lab for teens, a seed lending library, numerous book clubs, and technology training. Library activities are guided by a five-year community-based strategic plan.

About the community

The library is located in Perth, Ontario, a town of 6,000 people located in scenic cottage country an hour from both Ottawa and Kingston. Perth is known for its heritage character and many annual festivals. Drummond/North Elmsley and Tay Valley Townships are rural areas with unique character, including a mix of agriculture and art, long-standing traditions and new residents. There is a strong community spirit, with a high rate of volunteerism and recognition of the library’s important role in building community.

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate for this position will be an energetic and innovative librarian with a track record of success at managing programs, helping staff navigate change, sustaining strong community partnerships and advocacy efforts with funding municipalities, and obtaining grant funding and donations. Experience in a unionized environment will be an asset. As the leader of a small, tightly knit team of talented staff, the CEO must be a big-picture thinker who can also manage highly detailed work. The CEO acts as chief librarian, as well as manager of HR, finance, building and IT.

Qualifications

  1. Minimum of Master's degree in library science (or equivalent) and 2 years of progressively responsible experience in public libraries OR library technician’s diploma and 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public libraries.
  2. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with public, staff, board, and funders
  3. Strong organizational, consensus-building, problem-solving, and leadership skills
  4. Knowledge of public library services: public services, technical services, programming, outreach, and advocacy
  5. Knowledge of and demonstrated competency in information and communication technologies, policy management, finance, human resources, and building management
  6. Knowledge of legislation guiding public library service in Ontario
  7. Ability to manage effectively in a unionized environment
  8. Ability to work in an environment requiring frequent interaction with the public and need to respond to unexpected circumstances. Ability to work with interruptions, on multiple projects simultaneously, and under tight deadlines.

Salary range: $36.40-$38.38/hour
