The Opportunity

Reporting to the Supervisor, Acquisitions & Programming, the Coordinator, Youth Services provides library services to teens (typically ages 13 to 18) and new adults (typically ages 19 to 30) by designing and implementing creative and relevant programs and services. The position works to create a bridge to and among youth community organizations, reinforcing the library’s role as a safe place youth can participate in programs, discussions and access resources. The Coordinator is responsible for the acquisition, cataloguing and maintenance of a timely young adult collection that encourages reading, viewing, listening and use of library materials, programs and facilities. The position provides library information, ready reference and customer service, while promoting and supporting library services and events. The main duties and responsibilities of the position are in the areas of programming, outreach, crisis support, collection development and maintenance, cataloguing and processing, and general library support.

Normal hours of work are thirty-five (35) hours per week – this position is performed on-site with a rotating shift schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.

What You Will Do

  • Research, plan, design, facilitate and execute programs and services for teens and adults
  • Design, execute and maintain a schedule of events and programs, targeted by audience, including a variety of days and times.
  • Develop programs to utilize teen volunteers and students completing community service hours. Assist and direct teen volunteers and students.
  • Aid in developing marketing and public relations campaigns for each program utilizing all media sources, schools and other community organizations.
  • Provide support for teens and new adults in how to access and use resources that support curriculum based learning and recreational pursuits.
  • Design and implement outreach services and library programs targeted for youth that offer information, special skills or entertainment, and advance the library’s mission.
  • Promote the library through community liaison, division displays, tours, group presentations and orientation to services, collections and programs, radio and television appearances, and by contributing to the library’s social network sites.
  • Represent the library by sitting on youth-related committees, as deemed appropriate by Supervisor or Library Chief Executive Officer.
  • Deliver direct support, assistance and encouragement to youth and new adults experiencing crisis.
  • Develop, order and maintain a comprehensive, contemporary young adult collection in various formats by performing ongoing collection analysis including circulation statistics, timeliness and accuracy of collection composition and formats, new product introduction, community demographics and initiatives, and education curriculum.
  • Create and/or download/upload publishers/wholesales MARC bibliographic records to the database.
  • Aid in recruitment, interview, and selection of summer students, teen and student volunteers for the division.
  • As scheduled, designated “Staff Lead”, responsible to ensure closing routine completed and in the event of an emergency, contact appropriate management and authorities.

Skills and Experience

  • One (1) year of creative and constructive programming experience with teens and children, as well as in advocacy or community engagement, preferably in a library setting.
  • Ability to calmly and sensitively manage high stress situations.
  • Excellent administrative, communication, interpersonal, organizational, time management, and public relations skills, together with the ability to use tact and discretion and to deal courteously and effectively with the public and fellow staff members.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office applications, Integrated Library Systems, internet, database management software, and office equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task, cope with interruptions and work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines, exercise discretion and good judgment particularly when handling highly confidential/sensitive information. Possess a high degree of initiative and personal integrity.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Library and Information Technology or related discipline.
  • Mental Health First Aid and/or ASIST training an asset.
  • Possess a current Vulnerable Sector Check with results satisfactory to the employer, and a valid standard first aid & CPR/AED Level C certification (or willing to obtain).

Compensation

$58,494.80 to $74,601.80
