About Us:

The University of Toronto Libraries system is the largest academic library in Canada and is consistently ranked in the top ten among academic research libraries in North America. The system consists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate programs, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 500servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.

Your opportunity:

The Bora Laskin Law Library's extensive collection supports the curriculum and research interests of the Faculty of Law. It includes primary legal materials from the major common law countries such as Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom as well as from other selected jurisdictions. The Library subscribes to over 500 scholarly legal periodicals from around the world and collects legal and law-related texts and treatises. The Library also subscribes to a rich array of electronic services which extend the Library's resources far beyond its own walls. Access to these resources is available to eligible library users through the library catalogue or the library's electronic database collection.

The User Services Generalist is responsible for providing direct service to patrons and performs a range of duties: general reference, loan services, retrieval services, issuing library cards, providing information and referrals, and stacks and study space management. Service may be provided in person and via telephone or online. Circulation duties may involve opening the library, and staffing the library on weekends and/or evenings.  The User Services Generalist also has responsibility for supporting the library's InfoExpress service, and other front-facing user services for students and faculty at the Faculty of Law and those within the wider University community. The position may also provide workflow leadership; training and be responsible for the establishment of schedules for students and the preliminary documentation in the payroll process. Provides back-up for other staff and performs other related duties as required. May be responsible for other duties as outlined in the assigned position profile.

Qualifications (Minimum)

Education:

  • Community College Graduation required (Library Technician program) or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Experience: 

  • A minimum of one (1) year of related experience required, experience in an academic, scientific or technical library an asset

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of integrated library systems software required
  • Working knowledge of ILL management software desired
  • Working knowledge of U of T library system and policies an asset
  • Working knowledge of resource sharing procedures in the central and campus libraries an asset
  • Working knowledge of MARC records and cataloguing principles desired
  • Working knowledge of bibliographic searching and verification skills required.

Other:

  • Basic knowledge of integrated library automation software
  • Windows software applications, web browsers, and basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and e-mail software required.

  • This position is 100% on-site at the Bora Laskin Law Library and is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
