In keeping with the TRU Library mission, all library employees are committed to connecting our communities with inclusive spaces, trusted resources, and innovative services. Under the supervision of the Associate University Librarian (AUL), the Public Services Coordinator (PSC) provides direct service, training, and scheduling across a variety of library public services. The PSC develops and utilizes excellent interpersonal and information skills to assist with the smooth operational running of library service points, both in person and virtually. The PSC works proactively with all library employees to maintain continuity, effectiveness, and quality of public services.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creates and maintains public service schedules in accordance with library policies, under the direction of the AUL.
- Communicates any changes of public service schedules to library technicians as needed.
- Using library operational guidelines, and the provisions of the CUPE collective agreement, coordinates vacation and sick time requests and coverage.
- Works under the direction of faculty librarians to develop, implement, and assess processes and procedures for public services including: patron accounts, borrower services, book stacks maintenance, interlibrary loans and resource sharing, information and reference services, course readings, student room bookings, and other public services as developed.
- Serves as the AUL delegate in the event of a customer service or facilities issue requiring immediate attention.
- Assists with the resolution of facilities issues in public-facing areas of the library.
- Assists faculty librarians by coordinating library technician support for librarian-led outreach, events, instruction, workshops, or training. Participates in such programming as needed by faculty librarians.
- Performs public service duties as needed based on library technician absences for breaks, sick time, vacation, meetings, or other workload requirements.
- Under the direction of the AUL, and in conjunction with faculty librarians, supports the onboarding and training of new library technicians in public service areas.
- Provides input to the AUL on library technicians’ work assignments, goal setting, and performance.
- Participates on library committees and/or working groups.

EDUCATION:
- Undergraduate degree in a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution
- A two (2) year Library and Information Technology Diploma, reflecting the competencies as outlined in the CFLA Guidelines for Education of Library Technicians(2022) (available at: https://cfla-fcab.ca/en/guidelines-and-position-papers/guidelines-for-the-education-of-library-technicians)
EXPERIENCE:
- Three years’ experience work as a library technician
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to show empathy in difficult situations
- Ability to organize and coordinate a shared schedule
- Ability to effectively organize and coordinate staff training
- Ability to use policies and procedures to problem solve day-to-day issues
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy and quality of work
- Ability to work collegially with faculty librarians, library technicians and staff, and library administrators to improve library public services
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to use and troubleshoot basic equipment such as computer printers, multifunctional devices, point of sale machines, and library equipment such as microform readers, label printers, and self-checkout machines
- Ability to use, demonstrate, and troubleshoot specialized equipment such as 3D printers, recording equipment, digital cameras, VR systems, textile machines, mobile devices, or educational robots
- Ability to work well under pressure and deal courteously, tactfully, and discretely with a variety of people
- Commitment to maintaining currency with library technologies, and ongoing professional development and training, in relation to assigned work responsibilities
- Ability to use and demonstrate a wide variety of software programs and platforms such as integrated library systems, library research databases, learning management systems, web editors, social media, basic survey tools, and scheduling tools
- Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite products, including Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Demonstrated ability to perform electronic work processing and data entry in an enterprise relational database, e.g., integrated library system
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Sitting at a desk working on a computer for long periods of time, and standing for long periods of time
- Moving between floors and campus buildings while transporting library materials on a regular basis
- Shelving and shifting books, moving book trucks, and lifting boxes or other material up to 15 kg
- Maintaining cleanliness of computers and equipment
- Working closely with the public in a constantly changing environment
- May require night and/or weekend shifts
