Job Summary

The Fort St. James Public Library is seeking a qualified and enthusiastic individual to fill a one-year TERM full-time position of Programmer / Assistant Library Director while the incumbent is on medical leave. All library positions are public-facing and customer service-oriented.

Core Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of and adherence to all library policies and procedures.
  • Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and adaptability.
  • Promote library services, programs, and events both in person and through social media.
  • Assist with the processing and cataloguing of library materials.
  • Help maintain clean, organized, and welcoming library spaces and collections.
  • Staff the circulation desk, including checking materials in and out, providing readers' advisory services, answering phones, shelving materials, and assisting patrons.
  • Provide basic technology support for public computers, printing, scanning, and personal devices such as tablets, e-readers, and smartphones.
  • Coordinate Interlibrary Loan services, including pickup and delivery at the Post Office and maintaining statistics.
  • Manage weekly overdue notices through phone calls, emails, and invoicing.
  • Plan and deliver library programming, including Story Time, After School, Summer Reading Club, Teen Night, Book Club, passive programs and seasonal events.
  • Support the Library Director during annual leave by acting as Safety Officer and Privacy Officer and assisting with general operations and staff supervision.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • High-school diploma required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed post-secondary education in one or more of the following areas: Library Technician Diploma or Certificate, Early Childhood Education and/or Social Work.
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace change and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills, including the ability to resolve issues independently in the absence of the Library Director.
  • Excellent oral communication, presentation and writing skills
  • Capacity for physical demands, such as lifting and being on one’s feet for extended periods

Schedule:

This position is a full-time (35hrs/wk), temporary position until the return of the incumbent. The library is open Tuesday to Saturday. Evenings and weekends are required. Hours for this position:

Tuesday              11:15am-7:15pm

Wednesday       9:15am-5:15pm

Thursday             9:15am-5:15pm

Friday                   9:15am-5:15pm

Saturday             9:15am-2:15pm

Terms of Appointment:

Wages start at $33.78/hour plus 4% in lieu of vacation. After a three-month probationary period, the candidate may be eligible for vacation, extended medical and MPP benefits. Terms, conditions, and benefits of employment are subject to a Collective Agreement (CUPE 4951-03).
