
Job Summary
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for collection development for the entire system
- Keeps informed of current trends and developments affecting libraries
- Selects a variety of materials for library users both fiction and non-fiction areas including books, DVDs, CDs, periodicals aimed at users aged 18 and above, following purchase procedures established for the library
- Assists and trains the Children and Youth Services Coordinators in selecting and placing orders for materials specifically for children (picture books, fiction, non-fiction, DVDs) and teen fiction to the age of eighteen (18) years within the assigned budget amounts
- Coordinates surveys to collect information about purchase choices and tracks usage
- Uses Collection HQ to manage and analyze the library holdings for out-of-date items, read out items, subject area balance, and uses this resource to contribute to a collection development plan that best reflects the needs of the end users
- Coordinates the purchase of digital resources for the library and tracks usage of such resources
- Tracks budget spending on collections as a whole
- Oversees the use of the provincial interlibrary loan network by PEC patrons and authorizes purchases of specific materials not available through ILL, as needed
- Ensures that the physical and digital library collections are promoted on the library website
- Coordinates the deselection of materials from the collection
Responsible for circulation control system
- Actively contributes as a key contact for the circulation control system, liaising with the Ontario Library Consortium·
- Oversees Workflows /Symphony data administration including ensuring that upgrades are successfully implemented·
- Develops the necessary processes and procedures to manage the library circulation system efficiently and accurately ·
- Ensures that all staff have the necessary training to use the circulation/collection system and provides regular instruction on the system and processes to all staff·
- Works with the IT Coordinator to ensure all circulation control functions are working on the public workstations and that necessary statistics are captured
Oversees circulation, reference and reader’s advisory services within the library
- Provides instruction to library staff on the provision of reference, information and readers’ advisory services to users
- Instructs all staff on the use and availability of e-resources
- Assists with library displays in branches to promote the library collection and e-resources, as needed
- Assists with the development of library programs related to the library collection and communicates those plans to the Communications and Outreach Coordinator for public notices
Provides public service functions as necessary
· Provides circulation functions at a service desk, if needed
· Provides telephone reception duties and opening and closing procedures, if needed
· Assists users with use of public access computers and the use of electronic resources available through the library
Performs administrative functions
- Acts as CEO as assigned and works with the Chair of the Library Board
- Acts as a signing officer on library accounts
- Recommends scheduling and staff requirements to CEO
- Provides input to regarding staff performance
- Attends library promotional events and public speaking events
- Attends professional development meetings or workshops as required
- Prepares special reports for the CEO as requested.
- Communicates problems and/or concerns to the CEO
- Assists with the orientation of new employees
- As part of the senior management team, provides input regarding running of library including staff performance
