Job Summary

LIBRARY DIRECTOR

 The Mission of South Interlake Regional Library is to enhance our communities through literacy by providing innovative, accessible and dynamic library services and programs.  Our regional system currently includes branches in Stonewall and Teulon and a full-service Bookmobile, with a shared collection of over 60,000 titles.

Reporting to South Interlake Regional Library’s Board of Directors, the Library Director is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling all library operations and services in accordance with policies established by the Board.  The Library Director advises the Board, serves as Secretary /Treasurer to the Board, and acts as the Board’s representative to the public, professional associations, funders and government agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Education and Experience:

  • A post-secondary degree in Library Science, Business Administration or equivalent experience is an asset.
  • 5 years of management and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in finance, budgeting and human resource management.
  • Has an enthusiasm and an appreciation of reading and literacy. An understanding of how libraries and their systems function would be considered an asset.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Exemplary leadership skills including building and motivating a team.
  • Experienced with strategic planning and operationalization of strategic plans.
  • Critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong planning and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated self-start ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Must be able to exercise initiative and independent judgement in determining work priorities.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to professionally communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with staff, stakeholders, outside organizations and the public.
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.
  • Ability to use and understand technology.
  • Ability to use and understand accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks).
  • Experience in public service and engaging with local, provincial and federal stakeholders is an asset.
  • Working familiarity with payroll systems is an asset.
  • Prior experience in grant writing is an asset.
  • Prior experience in reporting to a governance board is an asset.
  • Prior experience in working with library or resource collections is an asset.
  • Prior project management experience is an asset.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for all library operations.
  • Oversight of development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Recruitment, training, and performance management of employees.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and policies.
  • Planning of operations for effective and efficient operation of the library.
  • Budgeting and financial administration of the library including payroll, grant writing and bookkeeping.
  • Advocacy and public relations with community and stakeholders.
  • Oversight of the operation and maintenance of physical facilities and capital equipment.
  • Liaison with the provincial government’s Public Libraries Services (PLS) and professional library associations.
  • Supervising Branch Librarians, the Technical Services Librarian and any applicable office staff. May be responsible for supervising volunteers or additional staff on occasion.

HOURS AND LOCATION OF WORK

 The Library Director will work a 35-hour week with hours generally being 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Monday through Friday, with one hour off for lunch.  The Library Director attends all Board and Committee meetings.  The Library Director’s primary office location is at the Stonewall branch, though the Library Director is expected to visit all library branches weekly.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position starts at $64,045.  The successful candidate will participate in the Municipal Employees Benefit Program, which consists of pension, long term disability and basic life insurance.
