Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Library Manager, this position is primarily responsible for contributing and implementing the long and short-term plans for the Library and Archives based on the approved Plan of Service. This position assists to identify operational efficiencies, set service standards, and promote a team environment that supports Library staff to develop their leadership skills and capacity to meet the Library and Archive’s objectives. In the absence of the Library Manager, this position is responsible for Library operations including staff supervision.

WORK RESPONSIBILITIES     

  • Work with the Library Manager to develop and implement a Plan of Service for the Library and Archives
  • Assist the Library Manager to develop and conduct community needs assessments and other information gathering methods to get public input and feedback on the Library and Archives
  • Encourage public use of the Library and Archives and provide the public with assistance and support in the use of Library or Archival materials, systems, and programs
  • Supervise and provide leadership to Library Page and volunteers
  • Train all Library staff and volunteers, including setting service standards and identifying professional and personal development opportunities
  • Assist with providing administrative services to the Board and attend Board meetings when required
  • Prepare reports as directed by the Library Manager
    • Designated as the Privacy Officer for the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) to manage the access and privacy responsibilities in accordance with legislation for the Library
  • Assist with all aspects of collection development for the Library
  • Assist with the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets
  • Assist with applications for financial assistance and other services for the Library and Archives as required
  • Represent the Library and Archives to work cooperatively and diplomatically with various Town Departments and other organizations to achieve common goals and interests as required
  • Provide quality service to all stakeholders of the Library and Archives
    • May be assigned a role within the Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) for Disaster Services
    • Undertake other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A combination of education and/or experience related to this position may be considered:
    •  A Master’s in Library and Information Studies from an accredited program with 3-5 years of library experience; or
    • A Master’s of Archival Studies from an accredited program with 3-5 years of archival experience; or
    • A Library Technician Diploma with 7-9 years of library experience.
  •  Experience working in a library setting in developing, implementing, and evaluating library or archival services, programs, and work procedures
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory work experience
  • Knowledge of the Libraries Act, Libraries Regulation, Access to Information Act (ATIA), and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA)
  • Experience in financial administration and budget preparation
  • Proficient with computers and systems, library catalogues and databases, electronic communications, and social media platforms
  • Satisfactory background screening is required for this position including a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • A Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract

  • Remain current on best practices, principles, and concepts in library and archival sciences

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hours

Able to work evenings and weekends as required.

Physical Effort

May assist patrons with reaching for library materials from shelves ranging from 5 cm to 2 meters from floor level, carrying of library materials (up to 10 kgs) across the Library; and pushing or pulling carts weighing 20 to 150 kgs. Able to perform heavy and manual lifting, bending, reaching of materials, pushing and pulling library carts and bins, and frequent sitting, standing, and walking. Repetitive motions and performance of general office duties.

  Travel

Some travel to field sites within and outside the Town under various road and weather conditions. Must maintain alertness and respond appropriately using defensive driving skills in various conditions (traffic, weather, distractions).

Work Environment

Moderate exposure to the public in a service provision capacity. Potential exposure to client volatility dealing with the public. Remote work feasible in accordance with Town remote work directives, policies, and procedures.

Compensation

$65,112.23 - $79,218.99 Annual Salary
