The Opportunity
Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries seeks a collaborative and innovative librarian to lead the libraries’ metadata team and support our functions in a multi-institutional cataloguing and discovery environment, OMNI. This includes participation in Collaborative Futures Working Groups. Preferably, the librarian will also have experience with library web services so that they can direct the work of IT staff who support our website.
This role may involve liaison work which includes providing expertise in discipline-specific reference, research consultation, library instruction, collection development, and collaborative support of graduate programs within the team of liaison librarians. Librarians actively contribute to providing research assistance through both in-person and virtual service points, and may occasionally be required to work non-standard hours, including weekends and evenings. They may be required to create or modify existing research LibGuides.
This role resides within the Collection Services Department under the direction of the Head, Collection Services that reports to the Associate Dean of Libraries for Scholarly, Research and Creative Activities. The librarian will supervise four or more OPSEU colleagues and also work closely with several others who participate in cataloguing as they are able. They will maintain policies, train cataloguers, revise workflows, and training documents.
The Web Services functions are performed with OPSEU colleagues situated in the Library Information Technology Services Department. The librarian will manage legacy web content, improve workflows, and create documentation and training for the content management system and online library tools. TMU Libraries supports Open Education at the University through its support of open publishing platforms and tools. The Web Services Librarian may be called upon to assist with managing the libraries’ open publishing platform and tools and to liaise with faculty and librarians to provide training and support. The librarian may collaborate with faculty and librarians to develop and maintain web-based Scholarly, Research, and Creative (SRC) initiatives.
The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:
- An ALA (American Library Association) accredited M.L.S./M.L.I.S. degree or equivalent degree
- A minimum of one year experience applying controlled vocabularies such as CSH, LCSH, and MeSH, and experience applying classification systems such as LCC, CanadianClass FC and PS, NLM Classification
- Knowledge of and experience with current cataloguing rules and standards particularly MARC21 and RDA
- Ability to respond to staff members’ cataloguing/metadata questions and support their learning
- Ability to learn new skills and to be flexible, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to change in a dynamic environment with creativity

- Experience with CMS platforms, particularly WordPress, and the ability to manage, troubleshoot, and provide training on the system
