Reporting to the Manager of Library Services, The Librarian is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Library's collection. This position determines procedures for Library technical services and recommends improvements to public services, programs, and policies, and ensures professional standards are met to provide the highest quality of service as mandated. As responsibilities are carried out across multiple community facilities, access to a reliable vehicle and the ability to travel between locations is required.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Advises and assists Library users in the selection of and access to information services, electronic resources and collections.
- Provides directives and training to front-line staff on corresponding areas of responsibility such as reader’s advisory, accessing electronic resources and collection management.
- Evaluates, selects and deselects materials within the Library’s primary adult information and leisure reading collections.
- Purchases and monitors the budget for collections relating to area of responsibility. Coordinates materials purchases from the Library’s vendors.
- Advises the Assistant Librarians on the implementation of processing requirements.
- Acts as intermediary higher authority with respect to information service and collections related complaints.
- Liaises with other libraries and members of the profession to keep abreast of trends, techniques, and standards of public library information services.
- Provides direct service to the public with service desk assignments.
- Takes responsibility for personal safety and health in the workplace and the safety and health of co-workers.
- Must work in compliance with the law and safe work practices and guidelines.
Key Qualifications:
- M.L.S. from an accredited university.
- One-year public library experience and experience working with the public.
- Valid G Driver’s License.
- Computer, software, and internet knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to work with children.
- Strong public speaking skills with an ability to conduct classes and speak in front of program groups, including children and adults.
- Knowledge of Library Policies/Procedures, copyright legislation.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build beneficial relationships.
- Teamwork and cooperation.
- Proven ability to multi-task and work accurately in a busy environment.
This is a full-time, unionized position working 35 hours per week. The wage rate is $31.57 per hour and comes with a comprehensive compensation package including benefits and OMERS Pension Plan.
