Our 200+ members include public and post-secondary libraries and institutions across Canada. About the Role

The BC Libraries Cooperative (BCLC) is seeking a limited term contract cataloguer to work in collaboration with Sitka’s Cataloguing Working Group and Co-op Staff to assist in advancing meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples by removing terminology in the shared catalogue descriptive metadata that is racist, harmful, outdated and culturally biased and replacing it with respectful language.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with Cataloguing Working Group members on what terminology/ontologies to use when replacing harmful terms
  • Monitors for changes, updates, and new initiatives in the wider GLAM sector that will inform the work of the Cataloguing Working Group
  • Assists Co-op database staff in developing scripts for replacing harmful terminology
  • Assists Cataloguing Working Group members in testing changes to terminology in the Sitka catalogue.
  • Collaborates with Co-op Support in writing communications to inform Sitka members of changes related to the work of the Cataloguing Working Group
  • Presents updates on Cataloguing Working Groups work at the Sitka Business Function Group meeting
  • Collaborates with Co-op Staff on reviewing and updating the Decolonizing Description website

Competencies and Qualifications:

  • Library Technician Diploma or equivalent library qualifications and work experience
  • Minimum 2 years cataloguing experience, including:
    • Knowledge of and experience working with AACR2 and RDA, and MARC format
    • Substantial experience in subject analysis with knowledge of Library of Congress Classification system (LCC) Library, Archives Canada classification system (LAC).
    • Knowledge of Indigenous ontologies and subject heading thesauri that have been developed by Canadian GLAM and knowledge institutions is an asset
    • Substantial experience performing original cataloguing
  • 2 years' experience using an Integrated Library System for cataloguing tasks. Familiarity with Evergreen is an asset.
  • Experience with library workflows in cataloguing and searching the catalogue
  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and positively with other team members and library partners in a distributed environment
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities
  • Must reside in British Columbia and have access to high-speed internet

Compensation Package:

  • This is a limited term full-time position (35 hours per week) from April 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027. The starting compensation range is $35-37 per hour.
  • We encourage qualified applicants willing to work remotely from anywhere in British Columbia
  • The successful candidate will receive a $60 monthly Internet allowance.
  • After 3 months, the successful candidate will be enrolled in an employer paid extended medical and dental package for employees and their dependents that includes a health spending account.
  • After a satisfactory probation period of 6 months, the successful candidate will be enrolled in the Municipal Pension Plan, a defined benefit pension plan
  • After a satisfactory probation period of 6 months, the successful applicant will receive a $500 one-time stipend for home office needs.
  • The BCLC has family friendly workplace policies including a generous annual vacation allotment, a week’s closure in late December and a flexible work culture that supports staff well-being.

Must provide own internet and computer. The Co-op operates as a "bring your own device" (BYOD) environment, requiring contractors and employees to supply and maintain their own suitable equipment.
