Associate Dean of Libraries, Health Sciences Library (HSL, MI, Education)
Position Overview:
Memorial University Libraries is seeking a collaborative, dynamic, service-oriented Associate Dean of Libraries (HSL, MI, Education) to lead library operations in the Health Science Library and provide administrative liaison with the branch libraries in the Faculty of Education and the Marine Institute. This is a time of change for the Health Sciences Library as its primary university stakeholders (Faculty of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Pharmacy) are expanding their education programs and exploring innovative methods of distributed learning. Faculty and student demand for knowledge synthesis support is increasing in tandem with research priorities of academic and clinical health units.
The successful candidate is a creative and experienced leader who works well in a collegial, complex, and changing environment. Along with the other Associate Deans of Libraries and the Dean of Libraries, the ADL (HSL, MI, Education) is a member of the Library Administrative Team, responsible for adopting a holistic, library-wide view in terms of strategic planning, policy and decision making, communication, and fostering an innovative work culture in the university libraries. As a member of the Library Administration Team, the ADL (HSL, MI, Education) shares responsibility for cultivating an inclusive and accessible environment in the context of a university community that values and promotes principles of equity, diversity, accessibility, anti-racism, and inclusion. In addition, the Library Administrative Team encourages a strong planning and assessment culture that enables continuous improvement to services, evidence-based decision making, and the advancement of pan-library strategic initiatives.
The ADL (HSL, MI, Education) reports to both the Dean of Libraries and the Dean of Medicine and is responsible for managing a $2M budget and a team of staff and librarians.
Applicants should be aware that the ADL’s portfolio of responsibilities are flexible. The scope of the position may expand and modify depending upon the strengths and abilities of the successful candidate and the changing needs of Memorial’s libraries.
Qualifications:
We welcome applicants with a combination of the following qualifications:
• A master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
• A strong record of professional practice, service, and scholarly activity as a librarian, preferably in an academic or research library environment; Experience in health sciences libraries is considered an asset.
• A successful record of library administration, including management of human, financial, and physical infrastructure resources
• A proven record of developing and enhancing library collections and services, with a focus on innovation, user-centered design, and preservation.
• Demonstrated success and commitment to assessing library impacts on student engagement and success, innovation in library practice, and research and scholarship.
• An appreciation of and commitment to improving the library user experience by supporting public services and developing library spaces, both physically and virtually.
• The ability to develop and execute strategic directions through a visionary, collaborative, and transparent leadership style.
• Strong knowledge of emerging technologies and standards that enhance digital scholarship, evidence synthesis, research data management, and scholarly communication.
• Exceptional communication skills and the ability to build strong partnerships within and outside the university.
• Experience working in a unionized environment and a commitment to fostering staff development.

Salary and Benefits:
This is a permanent, tenure or tenure-track position with an initial three-year renewable term. The anticipated appointment rank is Librarian III or IV, with salary ranges starting at $84,202 - $136,188 (Librarian III) and $98,380 - $171,633 (Librarian IV) as of September 1, 2024. In addition to a base salary, this position includes an administrative stipend.
