SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Central to Ingenium’s mandate, the Archivist is responsible for the development and management of Ingenium’s archival collections within the national collection. The position includes a wide range of archival activities including those related to collections development, description, storage, access, dissemination, preservation, and research. It also involves serving as the ambassador for the archival program and its collections in a variety of contexts. The position reports to the Director, Knowledge and Information Management and supervises staff, volunteers, fellows, and students working as part of the archives team.
EDUCATION
Master’s degree from a recognized university with a specialization in archival studies (preferred) or a specialization in information science, library science, information management (e.g. Master of Archival Studies, Master of Information, Master of Information Studies, Master of Library and Information Science, etc.)
EXPERIENCE
- Experience managing archival program including activities related to collection development, arrangement, digitization, access, reference, reproduction, preservation, and research
- Experience with describing archival collections (specifically preparing and publishing authority records, descriptive records, and item-level descriptions that respect professional standards of archival description)
- Experience with planning and project management in an archives or similar environment
- Experience disseminating information about archives in a variety of formats (for example articles, presentations, reports, social media posts, etc.) to a variety of audiences
- Experience managing staff, volunteers, students, and research fellows
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of descriptive standards including the Rules for Archival Description and the Canadian Archival Accession Information Standard as well as national and international trends in descriptive practices.
- Knowledge of theories and principles of archival science (e.g. respect des fonds [provenance, original order])
- Knowledge of the networks of archival institutions in Canada (to improve research and reference activities as well as avoid competitive or duplicative acquisitions that result in fractured archival record)
- Knowledge of trends in historiography and historical research (in order to provide guidance during research activities)
- Knowledge of metadata standards, schemas, controlled vocabularies, and ontologies to ensure interoperability and continuity in cataloguing and digital preservation (e.g. Canadian Subject Headings, Dublin Core, Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategies [PREMIS], Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard [METS], Metadata object Description Schema [MODS], Encoded Archival Description [EAD] XML schema, etc.)
- Knowledge of systems used for archival descriptions, cataloguing, storing, and providing access (e.g. Archeion)
- Knowledge of conservation and preservation practices in an archives or similar setting (e.g. library, museum, etc.)
- Knowledge of systems used for library and artifact cataloguing (e.g. eMU, online public access catalogues [OPACs])
- Knowledge and understanding of judicial context of archives in Canada (including the application of legislation related to archives such as copyright, privacy, etc.)
- Knowledge of ethics related to archival science (e.g. privacy, etc.)
- Knowledge of trends and broader initiatives related to archives
- Knowledge of Government of Canada’s heritage mandate as well as organizational strategies, policy instruments, and procedures
