Chief Librarian - Permanent Full Time
The Bowen Island Public Library is seeking an inspiring and community‑focused Chief Librarian to lead our small but dynamic public library. Reporting to the Library Board under the BC Library Act, the Chief Librarian provides strategic direction, oversees all library operations, and ensures our programs, collections, and services reflect the needs of Bowen Island.
As the Library’s senior leader, you will guide a dedicated team, foster an inclusive and welcoming environment, manage budgets and resources, support staff development, and build strong relationships with municipal and community partners. You will champion the Library as a vibrant, connected hub that enriches island life.

As Chief Librarian, you’ll help lead a library that is deeply valued, continually evolving, and integral to the health, creativity, and resilience of Bowen Island.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of library operations, programs, and services.
- Support and advise the Library Board; implement Board policies and strategic priorities.
- Oversee staff leadership, budgeting, financial management, and administration.
- Maintain strong community partnerships and represent BIPL at municipal and provincial levels.
- Support a positive, collaborative workplace and ensure high-quality public service.
Qualifications
- MLIS/MLS from an accredited program (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Minimum 5 years senior management experience in a public library or similar setting.
- Experience with budgeting, planning, and working with a governing Board.
- Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Knowledge of the BC Library Act and relevant legislation.
- Valid Driver’s Licence; successful Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check required.
