VCC Library invites qualified candidates to apply for the Library Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator position, commencing January 2, 2025. This is Full-Time Permanent Librarian position with a three-year term with the possibility of ongoing renewal at the Coordinator II level. Salary will dependent upon qualifications and experience and subject to the terms of the VCC Faculty Association Collective Agreement.

Located at Vancouver Community College (VCC) on the traditional unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples who have been stewards of this land from time immemorial, the Library Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator reports to the Library Director and is responsible for providing leadership and coordination for projects and services related to Library Indigenous Initiatives. The Coordinator is responsible for the planning and development, oversight and direction, training and implementation of ongoing projects and services. The Coordinator is a member of the faculty librarian team and works in collaboration and cooperation with the team in the approval and implementation of project proposals/charters, policy initiatives and planning priorities. This position is a faculty position and is therefore covered by the Collective Agreement between the College and the Vancouver Community College Faculty Association. SETTING

The Vancouver Community College (VCC) Library is dedicated to excellence and innovation in providing information resources and services to the VCC learning community, with a focus on meeting the diverse needs of students. The library team is known for fostering relationships, enhancing learning, providing knowledgeable service in a safe and accessible environment, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality information resources. The VCC Library is committed to promoting reconciliation, decolonization, and improving services for Indigenous students through collaborative efforts and the decolonization of practices. Since 2020, the Library has partnered with the Indigenous Education and Community Engagement (IECE) team on various initiatives to increase the relevance and visibility of our collection. These initiatives include creating subject guides on Indigenous studies, launching an Indigenous Music Collection, and significantly increasing funding for Indigenous materials. In 2022, after a thorough review with IECE, we boosted our Indigenous studies collection budget by 180%. Additionally, we collaborate with educational institutions and standards organizations to decolonize subject headings within our collection.

RESPONSIBILITIES

A. PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

  1. Leads the planning and development of projects that decolonize and Indigenize the Library.
  2. Advances the values and goals outlined the College’s Strategic Innovation Plan, Academic Plan, and any other planning documents.
  3. Plans and develops services in accordance with library and industry standards.
  4. Participates in ongoing review of services.
  5. Collaborates with the Department Head, Library Public Services to advise and assist the Director, Library and Learning Centre in departmental budgeting.
  6. Provides leadership in a changing library environment by advancing new information technologies and library service standards.

B. FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENT RELATIONS

  1. Develops and maintains relationships with relevant Indigenous programs, services and initiatives throughout the College, as well as with relevant student, employee and community groups.
  2. Builds relationships and consults with stakeholders.
  3. Serves as a resource and support for Indigenous research methodologies and traditional knowledge.
  4. Serves as a resource and facilitator for Library employees providing support for Indigenous teaching and learning, and to College and Library instructors seeking to decolonize and Indigenize their Library-related instruction and assessment.
  5. Participates in communities of practice related to decolonizing, Indigenizing, and disrupting colonialism.

C. LIBRARY PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

  1. Coordinates and provides leadership for projects and services related to the area. Collaborates with coordinators and others on shared projects.
  2. Communicates significant developments in projects to the faculty librarian team. When developments require a change in overall direction/prioritization in a project, brings a recommendation to the faculty librarian team for decision.
  3. Trains and provides direction to library staff assigned to projects and services. Communicates any concerns related to performance of duties to the library employee’s supervisor.
  4. Prepares, submits and monitors budget and expenditures related to projects.
  5. Collaborates with relevant coordinators, supervisors and staff to ensure backup and coverage during absences.
  6. Writes and revises job duties and responsibilities as needed.
  7. Oversees development and maintenance of guidelines and written procedures. Works closely with relevant coordinators, supervisors and staff to ensure workflow processes are efficient, relevant and documented.
  8. Promotes effective communication between all Library and Learning Centre personnel.
  9. Provides updates to the Library and Learning Centre Management Group as needed.

D. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participates in College-wide committees, events and projects.
  2. Maintains currency through monitoring of professional literature, attendance at workshops and conferences, and participation in relevant communities.
  3. Supported by the College, takes training required for emerging work.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Lived experience of Indigenous cultures, histories and knowledges and non-traditional knowledge systems, complimented by community connections and familiarity with the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish Nation), sə̓ lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) preferred; as well as Indigenous communities and organizations across British Columbia, (preferred), and/or Canada.
  • Experience working and building relationships with Indigenous people and communities.
  • Combination of experience, skills and knowledge of Indigenous knowledge system(s), decolonization, inter-generational trauma and the importance of positive self-concept in education.
  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from an accredited school of Library and Information Science or an approved (ALA/CLA) equivalent.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous literature and issues related to Indigenizing and decolonizing higher education and libraries.
  • Ability to teach information literacy from an indigenous perspective.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the relationship between traditional knowledge and intellectual property, research ethics in indigenous communities, and inter-generational trauma-informed practice.
  • Recent professional experience in a college, institute or university library or related library setting.
  • Experience in coordination of library services in a college environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate judgment, diplomacy, and sensitivity in challenging conversations.
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated skill in planning and delivering instruction.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both oral and written.

Compensation

$52.40 - $83.97/hour. Staring salary will be determined by education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the VCCFA Collective Agreement. Additionally Coordinator II will receive an additional allowance of $2,544.00 annually.
