The library has two branches as well as the Library Link, our mobile library.

Position Overview

The Coquitlam Public Library is currently seeking a Library Technician I to join our team. The primary focus of this position will be to provide exceptional customer service to the patrons of the library and providing professional staff a variety of technical library support.

Duties Include

  • Performs derivative, descriptive and non-complex original or copy cataloguing of specified library materials and resources as directed and according to established standards, procedures and practices
  • Performs non-complex work to increase the discoverability of the library collection, programs and services as directed, including the creation of booklists, displays and newsletters.
  • Performs non-complex work related to the acquisition of library materials as directed, such as processing requisitions for library materials.
  • Performs non-complex work related to the selection of items for collections as directed, such as creating selection lists based on specific criteria or subjects.
  • Updates and maintains content on the library website and social media
  • Assists with statistical documentation of the use of library collections, programs and services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful incumbent must complete a criminal record check prior to commencing work;
  • Required to join CUPE Local #561;
  • Required to work at any branch in the Coquitlam Public Library system as well as Library Link.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Library Technician diploma.
  • Sound knowledge of library methods, procedures and tools applicable to the work.
  • Sound knowledge of the Dewey decimal classification system, the current international cataloguing rules, and the local cataloguing standards, procedures and practices as related to the work performed.
  • Ability to assist the public in the access, location and use of a wide variety of internal and external source material, technical resources, and bibliographic tools.
  • Strong command of English communication skills, including verbal and written a necessity.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills required as this position works with various library staff and the public.
  • Ability to operate computer terminal and other library equipment. Strong keyboarding skills required.
  • Travel between branches is required. Shifts may be assigned at any branch.
