Position Description

This position is responsible for the planning, development, execution, evaluation and promotion of adult programs including building relationships with diverse sectors of the community and integrating library services and resources into programs and initiatives within a community-led framework. Acts as a liaison with the community and coordinates the development of system-wide adult outreach opportunities and programs that respond to community interests and needs. The major areas of responsibility include producing adult cultural and educational programs, to assist with the coordination and dissemination of publicity for library programs and services and to build community engagement and partnership development.

Candidate requirements

As the ideal candidate for this position you will hold a Masters of Library and Information Science Degree and have one year to eighteen months of related experience in the coordination and implementation of community-oriented adult library outreach programs, special services and/or the promotion of library services and programs. You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and good organizational and inter-personal skills with a working knowledge of technological applications including Internet, electronic databases, standard office computing software, social media tools. The successful candidate will be required to work at any of the Fort Erie Public Library locations on a varied schedule which includes evenings and Saturdays.

This is a full-time permanent, 35 hours per week, union position. The rate of pay is $31.19-$32.82 per hour and includes generous benefits and pension plans. A full job description is attached below.

Supervises or Directs Program Assistant Provides professional directives and training to Library staff and volunteers who are participating in community service programs. Directs Library Assistant (Marketing) in the creation, promotion and coordination of all marketing materials, social media and print and electronic displays.5.03Directs and trains cooperative work students and other volunteers who may assist the Library as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

6.01This position will monitor and evaluate existing adult programs and provide recommendations for change and growth. The Community Engagement Librarian will be responsible for producing all Adult Library Programming, for reaching out to members of the community for programming ideas, and for the ongoing evaluation of all programming using both output and outcome measurements.

6.02The position will be expected to create and implement a strategic and integrated approach to partnership development, community engagement and outreach services, building new relationships and strengthening the Library’s ability to identify and respond to diverse customer needs. Community engagement may include the implementation of special events, outreach and partnership building. This position will build relationships with community partners and stakeholders to foster a strong relationship between the community and the Library.

7.01The following sets out the principal functions of the position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all work requirements.

7.02Plans, develops, executes, evaluates and promotes adult programs including third-party presentations, in-house programming, musical performances and other cultural programs.

7.03Builds relationships with diverse sectors of the community and integrates library services and resources into programs and initiatives within a community-led framework.

7.04Acts as a liaison with the community and coordinates the development of system-wide adult outreach opportunities and programs that respond to Community interests and needs.

7.05Undertakes targeted outreach efforts towards special need, under-served and non-user populations with services, collections and programs designed to meet their needs.

7.06Oversees preparation of Library event publications, newspaper columns, website and social media updates regarding library programs and services.

7.07Works with other departments to coordinate all programs and publicity.

7.08Liaises and partners with external organizations and groups to raise awareness of Library services and programs and to increase use of Library resources and services.

7.09Keeps abreast of trends, techniques and standards in the delivery of adult programs, special services, and the promotion and marketing of the Library’s services, and programs to assist in short and long term planning in the corresponding areas of responsibility.

7.10Explores new avenues of service delivery in a collaborative manner with cross-functional teams both in and beyond the Library facilities.

7.11Coordinates and implements meeting room policies and procedures.

7.12Performs a variety of other support duties such as preparation of statistical reports and evaluation of library programs, completing grant applications as related to Library programs, general research and special projects.

7.13Provides direct service to the public with regularly scheduled service desk duty assignments.

7.14May be required to conduct children’s and teen programs in the absence of the Children’s and Teen Librarian.

7.15Takes responsibility for personal safety and health in the workplace and the safety and health of co-workers.

7.16Must work in compliance with the law and safe work practices and guidelines.

7.17Other duties consistent with job responsibilities.

Skills, Education, Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited program
  • One (1) year to eighteen (18) months related experience in the development and
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of technologies, including social media tools and electronic devices.

Working Conditions

  • Works thirty-five (35) hours per week (including days, evenings and weekends Monday-Saturday).
  • Works in computerized, non-smoking environment.
  • Work is occasionally stressful when serving public and moderately stressful in meeting demands and internal as well as external deadlines associated with the coordinating and development functions of providing the specified programs and services.
  • Minimal access to physical strain caused by lifting and prolonged use of computerized equipment.
  • May be required to work at any of FEPL’s locations.

Accountable for the effective and efficient provision of adult programming, special services, and the promotion of the Library’s programs and services throughout the library system and community. Accountable for the monitoring of expenditures that relate to those areas of the Library’s annual operating budget.

Job tasks are diverse and of moderate difficulty. The planning coordination and development functions of the job require judgment and analytical interpretation. The development of new or altered programs and services requires original and independent thinking. Misinterpretation of policies and procedures or ill-conceived program and services development may cause financial and time loss as well as erode the public’s confidence in the Library.

Compensation

$31.19-$32.82 per hour 35 hour week
