Overview of position

Working under the direction of the CEO, Newmarket Library, the Manager, Programs & Community Engagement is responsible for carrying out the Library’s strategic priorities to provide Library services outside of the Library, and programs to bring people into the Library. As Manager, Program and Community Engagement you will manage a portfolio of Programming, Community Engagement, Events, Outreach, Visiting Library Services, Marketing and Social Media.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in the development of overall Library strategies, policies and directions as part of a senior leadership team including the CEO and the Manager, Library Operations and Manager, Library Services.
  • Proposes new strategies and long-term initiatives relative to programming, future requirements and administrative changes. Implements actions to achieve business objectives .Leads and coordinates the implementation of strategic and annual business and work plans, and major policies and service level standards, by providing direction to Library Programs and Community Engagement staff.
  • Leads and manages the staff and the operations of Programming and Community Engagement to meet the performance standards. Programs and Community Engagement include, but are not limited to; management, program planning, community events, building partnerships, social media, marketing and the website.
  • Directly manages an identified portfolio, of selection and evaluation of programming, community engagement, events, outreach, visiting library services, marketing and social media.
  • Manages the hiring, discipline and termination processes in coordination with the CEO and Human Resources.

Credentials Required

  • Post Secondary degree in Humanities, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Business Administration or Communication or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master of Library and Information Sciences degree from an accredited institution an asset
  • Demonstrated experience of 5 to 7 years in a public library at a managerial/supervisory level, preferably in a unionized environment with proven ability to anticipate and manage growth through creativity, innovation and vision.
  • Knowledge and Skills
  • Proven progressive experience within a library environment, understanding of the political environment working collaboratively with Board members, senior management team and Town municipal staff; ability to establish strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking to determine new policies and processes, planning, and financial management or to recommend changes for improved service delivery
  • Thorough understanding of the management, selection and loaning of library materials, customer and information services, learning and discovery programming services, adult and/or children’s program services, and community information and volunteer database.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills and experience in the areas of team building, flexibility, motivation and development of staff including strong coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent administrative, public relations, marketing, presentation, organizational and time management skills to handle a range of financial and administrative demands.
  • Ability to evaluate and anticipate the needs of the community in order to select appropriate library materials, review and assess services to determine new programs or implement changes to meet the needs of the public.
  • Knowledge of current library technology and applications, as well as ability to assess trends and technological developments.
  • Solid communication skills and ability to deal cooperatively and effectively with staff in a unionized environment as well as thorough working knowledge of labor relations principles and practices, collective agreement negotiation/administration and employment legislation.

Due to the responsibilities of this position, a Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the Library is required.

Hours of work

35 hours a week including evening and weekend shifts
