Job Summary

Position Purpose and Summary

The Librarian: Systems and Technical Services is responsible for management and administration of all library systems that support the Library's delivery of services and resources to its users. In addition to the core integrated library system (SirsiDynix Symphony), other key systems include RelaislLL and OCLC Worldshare, (interlibrary loans), EBSCO's EDS, (discovery search), SirsiDynix's ERM (electronic management resource software) as well as a variety of related software, hardware and platforms that support the library's operations. Additional responsibilities include budget input, overseeing acquisitions and inter-library loan, and supervising library technicians.

 

Key Areas of Accountability

Systems

  • Technical administration of all library systems, including, but not limited to:
    • The integrated library system (SirsiDynix Symphony)
    • Discovery layer (EBSCO Discovery Service)
    • Interlibrary loan systems (RelaisILL and OCLC Worldshare)
    • Acquisitions systems (EBSCO GOBI and Ingram)
    • Electronic Resource Management software (SirsiDynix ERM)
    • Libguides (Springshare)
    • Arca (Islandora) and Borealis (Dataverse)
  • Basic troubleshooting of all library hardware and software (scanners, printers, workstations, etc.). Coordinate with I.T. to solve more complex issues.
  • Production of annual collection statistics and other systems related reports.
  • Recommend new or upgraded software, hardware and other systems; manage installation and rollout of new or upgraded software, hardware, or other systems.

Technical Services

  • Oversee acquisitions workflow.
  • Oversee interlibrary loans workflow.
  • Oversee and/or assist in bibliographic maintenance projects in collaboration with other staff.

Other

  • Supervise assigned staff (library technicians, student assistants, practicum students) including performance evaluations.
  • Serve on library / university committees as directed by the University Librarian.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities.

Skills and Abilities

  • Must demonstrate both aptitude and interest in systems, technology and technical services related work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-resolution skills.
  • Thorough understanding of library services, collections, technologies and resources
  • Solid knowledge of current integrated library systems and bibliographic discovery layers, software and platforms (ILS, discovery tools, link resolvers, collection management software etc.).
  • Solid knowledge of core library functions and the interrelated workflows between departments, especially in Technical Services.
  • Experience administering an integrated library system (Symphony preferred).
  • Manage acquisition of new resources & related budget functions, records management reports and discipline allocations.
  • Ability to synthesize information and analyze requirements to document business specifications and determine solutions.
  • Knowledge of relevant electronic databases and online resources
  • Competence with computer applications generally used in a business environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including technical writing for requirements specifications.
  • Competence with computer applications generally used in a business environment, such as MS Office.
  • Strong leadership and time management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Evening and weekend work may be necessary.

Standards & Requirements

Education: ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent). Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline an asset (e.g. Computer Science) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Experience:  Three to five years relevant experience in a library environment, including at least two years in a systems environment and/or Technical Services, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Supervisory experience preferred.

Compensation

Annual Salary Ranges: General Librarian: $59,728 - $71,855 Assistant Librarian: $69,805 - $90,631 Associate Librarian: $81,207 - $108,876
