Youth Services Librarian

Under the supervision of the Chief Librarian/Deputy Chief Librarian, the Youth Services Librarian creates, coordinates, organizes, publicizes and supervises branch programming for children and young adults for the Cumberland Public Libraries.
∙ MLIS degree from an accredited library school
∙ Computer Experience in a Windows based environment
∙ Experience working with children and young adults
∙ Library experience preferred
∙ In consultation with each branch, organizes programs of interest to children and young adults.
∙ Publicizes programs by writing press releases, creating signs and flyers, brochures, and contacting local schools and interest groups.
∙ Organizes author visits and guest speakers.
∙ Periodically visits branches to conduct programming.
∙ Creates resources for branch staff to use with children’s programming.
∙ Give presentations and demonstrations on library services.
∙ Visits daycares, schools, community groups, etc. promoting library services.
∙ Develops partnerships with external agencies.
∙ Applies for external funding for programming by preparing grant proposals.
∙ Plans, promotes and oversees the Summer Reading Program and Teen Summer Reading Program; manages associated staff.
∙ Prepares booklists to highlight collections.
∙ Assists with management of social media.
∙ Supervises branch staff and students in areas concerning children’s and young adult program planning.
∙ Serves as Acting Chief Librarian in the absence of the Chief and Deputy Chief Librarian.
∙ Assists the Chief Librarian and Deputy Chief Librarian in the management of library branches.
∙ May be asked to assist with interviewing, selecting and training staff.
∙ In consultation with Chief Librarian develops children’s collection, young adult collection, and participates in all areas of collection development.
∙ Reads reviews and catalogues in order to suggest appropriate materials.
∙ Selects material of both print and non-print versions of children’s fiction, non-fiction, magazines and videos.
∙ Weeds collection.
∙ Works assigned shifts in the Amherst branch.
∙ Checks out and checks in library materials.
∙ Inputs patron records into computer database.
∙ Offers general reference and reader’s advisory.
∙ Places holds on books.
∙ Ensures that library rules are maintained and order is kept in the library.
∙ Serves as a liaison between community interest groups and the regional library when applicable.
∙ Serves on various Provincial Library committees including the Youth Services Committee.
∙ May be assigned other duties and projects as required which may supersede regular tasks. Other duties may include but are not limited to: fund raising, conference work and any other tasks assigned by the Chief or Deputy Chief.
∙ Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
$36,885 - $41,515 annually and a benefit package.
Term: Permanent full time with a sixth month probationary period.
