Lakehead University invites applications for a Law Librarian to commence in January 2018. The Law Librarian reports to the University Librarian and Vice-Provost (Teaching & Learning) and will work closely with the Dean, Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.

Lakehead University Library system consists of the Chancellor Paterson Library, Education Library, and Law Library on the Thunder Bay campus as well as Heritage Place and University Avenue locations on the Orillia Campus. The Library participates actively in Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) projects such as Ask, Scholars Portal, and Collaborative Futures as well as Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN). Librarians participate in Librarians’ Council, are eligible to be elected to Senate and contribute through teams, task groups and projects. Librarians are included in the Lakehead University Faculty Association and are eligible for Sabbatical Leave.

Located in Thunder Bay, the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law graduated its first class in 2016. Its Integrated Practice Curriculum has made the Faculty the first Canadian law school to provide real world legal skills as part of the J.D. program, allowing graduates to be called to the bar in Ontario without needing to article. Three mandates are embraced within the Faculty’s curriculum: Aboriginal and Indigenous law, Natural Resources and Environmental Law, and Sole/Small Town Practice with the Integrated Practice Curriculum. Committed to making a difference, providing access to justice, and leading the way for northern communities, the Faculty is home to an innovative curriculum, distinguished learner-centered legal professionals, and the opportunity to serve its community through Lakehead University Community Legal Services.

The services of the Law Library include individual research consultations for students, assisting faculty in searching, locating and organizing appropriate resources for their legal research, and keeping students and faculty up-to-date with current and emerging resources. Legal research learning outcomes are an integral part of the program at Lakehead University and are addressed in a first-year legal research and writing course, an upper division writing requirement, and in a proposed Advanced Legal Research course.

The incumbent will have the following responsibilities:

  • Provide library service and support to the faculty, staff, and students involved in the Juris Doctor Program.
  • Build strong relationships with the students and faculty in the program, developing and delivering information, research instruction and instructional materials, and providing in-depth research support.
  • Supervise and directs the work and professional development of library support staff, including students.
  • Develop collections and information resources to support the Faculty of Law
  • Develop curriculum and instruct students in legal research and writing
  • Contribute to library teams, projects and services
  • Work collaboratively with staff, faculty, and external partners

An ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science is required for this appointment as is legal research experience, including familiarity with Canadian and international legal research sources. In addition to a library degree, a law degree is preferred.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • A commitment to high quality service
  • Understanding of the Canadian legal system, statutes, and case law
  • Knowledge and understanding of instructional techniques for teaching legal research methods and legal information tools
  • Experience developing online guides, tutorials, and other instructional materials
  • Aptitude and competence in using information technology
  • The ability to develop and sustain effective and collaborative professional working relationships and partnerships
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to take initiative
  • A deep understanding of, and commitment to, diversity and inclusivity
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
