The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) delivers services through 14 locations – urban and rural, a Mobile Library, and Library Home Service. Patron-centric, the TNRL goes the distance in providing service for a lifetime of personal growth, learning and enjoyment through programming, resources and space designed for people of all ages and abilities.

The Kamloops Library is located in the bustling TNRD Civic Building which also houses the Kamloops Art Gallery and a busy café. This 15,000 sq. ft. branch is a hub for community, literacy and arts programs.

The Role

The TNRL is recruiting a Branch Head for the Kamloops Library who is keen to work in a vibrant and busy public library. The Branch Head is responsible for the effective delivery of services including modelling superior customer service, leading a library team, and ensuring a top-notch patron experience by taking ownership of the facility, its collections and programs. As one of your many attributes, you’re a community builder, an effective communicator, a champion of intellectual freedom and will help foster strong relationships and partnerships across the regional district.

You will find yourself spending more time on the floor engaging with the community and supporting your team than working in your office. Interactions will constantly challenge and inspire you as you lead this exciting community hub. You will recruit, develop and mentor library staff. By working closely with your front-line team, you will build on their strengths to ensure that the library is a most welcoming environment. Working collegially with the Library Leadership Team, the Branch Head will participate in system-wide committees and lead project work for the betterment of the TNRL.

This is a full-time position (35 hours/week) on a six-week rotation (weeks 1-4 shifts are Monday to Friday, week 5 shifts are Sunday to Thursday, and week 6 shifts are Tuesday to Saturday) with the following schedule:

Sundays: 8:30am - 4:00pm

Mondays: 10:30am - 6:00pm

Tuesdays: 9:30am - 5:00pm

Wednesdays: 9:30am - 5:00pm

Thursdays: 9:30am - 5:00pm

Fridays: 9:30am - 5:00pm

Saturdays: 9:30am - 5:00pm

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced library professional who holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited program and has proven leadership and supervisory experience - ideally within a unionized environment.

The required knowledge, skills and abilities for success in this role include:

  • Community: Good understanding of library management, current practices, and trends in public libraries. A passion for helping others, a belief in the importance of literacy and Intellectual Freedom. Familiarity with the mission of public libraries, including promoting literacy, access to information, and community services.
  • Communication and Leadership: Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively connect with staff and the public. Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, with skill in dealing openly and tactfully in a variety of situations. Ability to lead and inspire staff while enhancing individual and team effectiveness. Demonstrated ability to work in both a team-based environment and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Technical: Working knowledge of library service development and implementation. Commitment to lifelong learning and personal/professional development. Strong attention to detail, superior organizational and prioritization ability. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office, social media and mobile devices.

There is a physical component with this position and the ability to lift 20-25 lbs. is a requirement. This position requires a Criminal Record Check and the completion of a driver’s abstract (a valid BC Driver's License is required).

This position falls under the provisions of the Collective Agreement with the BC General Employees' Union, Local 705. This is a Pay Grid 18 position at $38.86 - $43.03/hr (+4% increase effective January 1, 2025) in addition to a comprehensive benefit and pension plan.
