Assistant Director, Experience & Engagement North Campbell River , BC


As part of a dynamic team, you will be expected to work collaboratively and advance the service goals and strategic direction of Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) by providing leadership and innovation in the development, delivery and evaluation of library services that support the Mission, Vision and Values of the Vancouver Island Regional Library.

The Assistant Director, Experience & Engagement (North), is responsible for an assigned portfolio. Under the direction of the Director of Library Services & Planning, the Assistant Director is responsible for leading a Public Services team of Library Managers in the development and delivery of legendary customer service.

The Assistant Director, will oversee the development, delivery and evaluation of programs and initiatives that respond to current and future needs of the communities served, the provision of information and reader’s advisory services that enhance the customer experience, literacy initiatives, multilingual services and community engagement through outreach.

  • Excellent knowledge of information services technology.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, applications software and interfaces.

In this position, your duties may include:

  • Leads, mentors and develops the team of Library Managers in their role of providing legendary customer service to the communities of VIRL.
  • Develops standards of performance and evaluation methodologies that analyze.
  • Responsible for the development, delivery, maintenance and evaluation of VIRL’s service delivery plan. The service delivery plan will: provide programs and initiatives that respond to community needs and expectations; enhance and extend the customer experience; and support the strategic plan.
  • Complete management of employees within the division including: recruitment, counselling, mentoring, performance evaluation and the implementation of disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
  • Develops, fosters and leads cross-functional committees for the implementation of system wide initiatives.
  • Provides initiative, leadership and guidance in the research, assessment and development of internal and external programming that delivers the strategic plan.
  • Promotes staff commitment and a focus towards organizational goals and directions.
  • Working with Divisional and Library Managers, liaises and partners with external organizations and groups to increase the use of library resources and services.
  • Responsible for the development, delivery, maintenance and evaluation of VIRL’s service delivery plan. The service delivery plan will: provide programs and initiatives that respond to community needs and expectations; enhance and extend the customer experience; and support the strategic plan.
  • Develops and manages all assigned budgets.
  • Develops and strengthens the image of VIRL in all areas including, but not limited to marketing, promotion and branding. Monitors to ensure that the corporate image at all service points are visible and professional.
  • Oversees the design and development of the VIRL website, specifically the “look and feel”. Ensures content is accurate and timely.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Completion of an ALA approved graduate degree in librarianship and information studies.
  • Minimum of five (5) years (full time) relevant library management experience as a manager in a public service setting.
  • Completion of workshops/seminars and/or demonstrated skills and knowledge in the areas of ILS, technical and support services, facilitating, training, leadership, team building, customer service, communication and conflict resolution.

You should also know:

You are required to have a valid BC Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle given that there will be travel to various VIRL Branches or potential VIRL Branch locations. You will also be required to satisfactorily complete a Criminal Record Check (Working with Children & Vulnerable Adults).
