POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the direction of the Librarian(s), the AC Library Assistant is responsible for providing basic library staffing and service continuity to ensure that the Library continues to support the academic culture of Alexander College during assigned hours when classes are being offered.

The Assistant is responsible for performing duties related to the circulation of library materials, providing information concerning library policies and resources to users, and maintaining equipment and supplies within the Library space, among other duties as assigned.

An ideal candidate for this position would possess a basic interest in research, literature, and some aspects of librarianship. The successful candidate should also have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, good interpersonal and service skills, and a willingness to learn the basic functions of library automation.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The Library Assistant will report to the Librarian at the campus at which he or she is assigned.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE:

Full time, Permanent.

WORK WEEK:

The Library Assistant will work 40 hours per week.

  • Hours will be assigned by the Librarian(s).
  • Evenings and Saturdays will be required.

This schedule may be adjusted at any time during the term of the contract by the Librarian per the Unit’s needs.

LOCATION:

Burnaby and Vancouver Campuses, flexibility to travel between campuses will be required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma or Degree in a related field preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent interpersonal & relationship building skills
  • Excellent coordination skills
  • Superior team work capabilities
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and cordiality when working with others
  • Strong ability to take initiative and complete tasks as assigned
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of the BC College and University system

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

1 Manage the library facility

  • Hardware and printing support
  • Ensure that library users are behaving appropriately
  • Clean minor messes and trash
  • Manage the print collection
  • Keep the bookshelves organized
  • Return books to shelves when they are returned

2 Creating student cards

  • Ensure records are accurate and adhere to stated library policy

3 Circulation

  • Use the catalogue to check books and DVDs in and out of the library
  • Process late fee payments
  • Demonstrate and provide access to databases and digital assets.

4 Provide reports to librarians

  • Prepare and submit reports in a timely manner, as requested by the librarians
  • Notify librarians of any emerging concerns or issues pertaining to either library

Secondary

5 Participating in Library Division meetings and Student Affairs Division Meetings

6 May be required to support wider administrative functions throughout the College as assigned by the Librarians or Director
