Medicine Hat Public Library is seeking a dynamic professional librarian to join us in the new role of Youth and Community Librarian I.This is a full time permanent opportunity working 37.5 hours per week.
The Youth and Community Librarian’s primary responsibility is to increase awareness and use of the Medicine Hat Public Library within the community. Approximately 50% of this position will be dedicated to the Youth Services Department with an emphasis on services and programs for teens (ages 13-18). This position coordinates and oversees the teen advisory group and conducts outreach to youth-related organizations, middle schools, and high schools. This position may also be expected to provide programming for younger children as part of the Youth Services team. The remaining 50% of the position will focus on outward facing library services in the community, finding new ways to engage with non-library users and increasing the profile of the Medicine Hat Public Library.
The Youth and Community Librarian may work at any of the library’s service points. This position should be able to assist and instruct users with both the library's catalogue and online databases, register new members, and perform circulation duties. It is the responsibility of the Youth and Community Librarian to keep their library skills current and to familiarize themselves with new print and electronic resources in order to better serve the public’s information needs. This position is people-focused; the ideal candidate enjoys networking, public presentations, and working outside the library with different groups or in the community with specific populations. The Youth and Community Librarian finds creative and innovative ways to further the Library’s Plan of Service.
A Master of Library Science/Studies degree or equivalent from and ALA accredited University program
A Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License
A clear Criminal Record Check including the vulnerable sector.
This position is covered under the Collective Agreement between The Medicine Hat Library Board and CUPE Local 46. The start rate is $27.25/hour; upon successful completion of the probationary period the job rate is $30.28/hour. The Library provides an excellent benefits package and Library employees participate in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP).
