Community Outreach Librarian, Information Services
Full-time - Day, evening and weekend shifts

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads and directs the planning and delivery of programs and services in support of library customers from all socio-economic backgrounds and in particular those living with mental illness, addiction and/or experiencing homelessness.
  • Oversees and provides services to customers to navigate barriers in accessing community health, housing and social service supports. This includes on-site support, intervention and informed referrals for this client group who identify as homeless and/or in need of community support.
  • Develops partnership and outreach opportunities and maintains contacts with local social service agencies to develop library services to benefit at-risk individuals and groups. In this capacity, ensures the relevancy of collections and services and facilitates cooperative ventures.
  • Oversees social service initiatives and acts as a resource to support the PIC at the Central Library, as well as staff and customers system-wide. Leads staff development and training related to supporting customers with complex needs.
  • Supervises staff in the delivery of social service programs, resources and services and under general direction carries out evaluation of performance.
  • Provides a high calibre of advanced reference and readers’ advisory and technology support services to the public at the Central Library and practices pro-active reference in accordance with established standards.
  • Able to learn and work effectively with technology. Instructs others in the use of technology, including hardware, software and electronic resources.
  • Acts as a resource for new and emerging information tools. Stays current with the issues and trends of the profession.
  • Merchandises and maintains collections at the Central Library, and offers feedback on these collections.
  • Provides customer service related to the circulation of materials, such as checking in/out and renewing materials; explaining policies and procedures and granting exceptions when appropriate; collecting fines; negotiating financial transactions; etc.
  • Acts as PIC on a regular basis, and in this capacity ensures the smooth operation of the library system.
  • Assumes budgetary responsibilities as required.
  • Serves on library committees and task groups and Strategic Plan projects as required.
  • Administers and participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of safe work practices and procedures in support of Kitchener Public Library’s Health and Safety Policy. Ensures staff receive relevant training on health and safety issues. Communicates with staff and Joint Health and Safety Committee on health, safety and wellness related issues.
  • Follows safe work practices and procedures in support of Kitchener Public Library’s Health and Safety Policy.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MLS, MIS or MLIS
  • BSW or related training/coursework in a related human service field an asset
  • Strong interest in developing social service programs and resources
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and be sensitive to a diverse customer base to provide counsel and referrals to resources as needed
  • Interest and ability to effectively build partnerships with community based social service agencies
  • Well-developed conflict management, crisis assessment, and facilitation skills to respond or assist in emergency situations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced instructional skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative in the development of new projects
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and the ability to work effectively as a member of a work team
  • Proficient in the use of online resources and technology including hardware and software
  • Strong commitment to excellence in customer service

Salary Range $56,870 - $66,001
