Position Summary:

This position is responsible for delivering excellence in public service to all library members including but not limited to the provision of reader’s advisory, technology support, delivery of programs and group visits, completion of interlibrary loans, etc. As such, the successful applicant is expected to be available to work any shift (day, evening and weekend) of the Clarington Public Library hours of operation at any branch location of the Clarington Public Library system.

Position Responsibilities:

These responsibilities indicate the general nature and level of work expected. It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required by the incumbent. The incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as required as the nature of library services and the work environment changes.

  • Advise and assist library members in the provision of information through the library’s physical and online resources through referrals or interlibrary loans
  • Advise and assist library members in the provision of information electronically through the library’s subscription databases, library catalogue, and Internet links
  • Assist in the training of the public with electronic resources and technology
  • Deliver innovative library programs/class/group visits to members of all ages including those that incorporate technology
  • Maintain the visual standards of the library including the planning and implementation of displays and promotion
  • Assist with information technology (IT) initiatives as required
  • Contribute to the implementation of library information technology (IT) plans and assigned special projects
  • Carry out research/statistical compilation, report writing as required
  • Comply with all procedures and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Library Safety Policies and other applicable legislation or regulations
  • Act as in-charge person as required

Qualifications/Abilities:

  • Completion of an accredited Library Technique diploma program with one year of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience to the satisfaction of the Library CEO
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of technological applications including the internet, electronic databases, social media, standard office computing software
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public library resources and how to search for information
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Extensive experience serving the public with a strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to deliver an engaging and effective program/presentation to groups of all ages
  • Ability to balance effectively multiple responsibilities and priorities in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace change and learn new technologies
  • Valid Ontario Motor Vehicle Operator’s “G’ Licence and the use of a motor vehicle
  • A satisfactory, current (within the last 90 days), Criminal Records Check (CPIC) with Vulnerable Sector Screening, from a Canadian Police Information Centre is required prior to commencing employment

Courses completed from Information Technology related diploma programs is considered an asset.
