Job Summary

Overview:

Under the direction of the Deputy Library Director, the Programmer plays a key role in supporting literacy and lifelong learning by providing high quality learning opportunities to patrons of all ages.  Working under the Deputy Library Director the Programmer plans and delivers a wide range of library programs to families, children, teens, adults, and seniors.  This role is also responsible for enacting community partnership commitments, planning self-led learning activities, and supporting Program evaluation.

In addition this role provides reference, readers’ advisory and circulation support in person and by phone.

Core Responsibilities:

Library Programs

  • Designs and delivers diverse programs for children and teens, with consideration of the principles of child development, literacy, and the needs, interests, abilities, and goals of all children, teens, their caregivers, educators, and community partners
  • Designs and delivers diverse programs for adults, from young adults to older adults
  • Leads tours and library visits for schools, partners, and community groups
  • Ensures that the content and format of library programs are accessible, foster literacy and lifelong learning, align with the library’s goals, promote the library’s collections and services, reflect the principles of reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion; and respond to community needs and interests
  • Supports collaborations that align with the library’s mandate and strategic plan, and attract new library users
  • Explores and learns new technologies and skills to support emerging program priorities
  • Supports the Deputy Library Director to train coworkers in best practices for program development and delivery

Community Relations

  • Represents the library at community events
  • Supports collaborations that align with the library’s mandate and strategic plan, and attract new library users
  • Produces posters, social media content and other materials

Circulation Desk

  • Provide support at the circulation desk as needed.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • High school graduation or equivalent, and a relevant post-secondary credential such as Early Childhood Education, a Library Technician Diploma or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Experience organizing events, delivering programs and/or leading groups

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent instructional and facilitation skills, including the ability to speak to a group and use a variety of instructional techniques for different ages and audiences
  • Ability to teach basic digital literacy skills, demonstrate, and explain technologies
  • Knowledge of library programming best practices and trends
  • Knowledge of inclusive practices, and the ability to modify program content and delivery techniques to respond to community and learner needs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, work with limited supervision, and meet deadlines

Occupational Requirements

  • Valid class 5 BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Lift, move or carry equipment or materials up to 50 lbs
  • Stand or sit for extended periods of time
  • Reach below shoulder level and above shoulder level

Job Details:

Hours of work. This is a 35 hour a week position.  Hours may very due to operational needs, evenings and weekends required.

 

Compensation

$29.59/hr, plus benefits package and pension
