Under the general direction of the Director, Digital and Public Services, the Location Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the library location. They are responsible for providing effective leadership and supervision to staff; for ensuring community engagement and a vibrant response to community needs; and for the overall operating effectiveness of the location, in alignment with the organization’s vision, mission, and strategic goals. They are responsible for providing advanced front-line reference and reader’s advisory to library members and resolving member issues referred from front line staff. In consultation and collaboration with other members of the management team and service divisions, they are responsible for seeking solutions and implementing services to meet the unique needs of community members in their location catchment, including maintaining relationships with external partners. This position will work at other locations until the new Southeast Galt location is opened.
What You’ll Do
As a Location Manager, you will:
Responsibility for program/service delivery (internal/external), coordination of staff
- Manages directly, the delivery of location services and maintains a safe work environment.
- Builds and maintains relationships with the community to ensure library services are responsive to community needs and interests.
- Investigates and resolves escalated member complaints and concerns.
- Participates in material selection planning to ensure purchasing meets current demand and supports programming for all ages.
- Responsible for addressing inappropriate or disruptive behaviour of members according to established procedures.
- Promotes CPL and the use of its programs and services by conducting tours, orienting new members to the collection, writing magazine and newspaper articles, material reviews and website content as requested. Participates as requested in meetings with outside agencies and institutional partners to promote CPL, undertake joint activities and address inter-agency/institutional problems to ensure the delivery of regular services and special programs.
- Responsible for the look and feel of the overall location and ensures proper procedures are followed when requesting work orders from internal support services.
Project management (planning, producing, implementation, monitoring, reporting)
- Works with other department leads as appropriate to coordinate location staff in the delivery of programming that is consistent within the programming framework and guidelines.
- Undertakes assigned systemwide projects and other location-specific initiatives. Supports the development, piloting and implementation of new programs and services, as well as strategic actions (as-assigned) to meet community needs.
Business planning, develop policies and enterprise management
- Monitors and approves work schedules for staff, while ensuring operational levels are maintained.
- Responsible for the location program, supply and discretionary budgets, for the proper handling and security of daily cash and for the monitoring and submission of payroll hours and employee changes.
- Compiles and prepares reports and month-end and year-end statistics.
Requirement to adapt, modify, procedures, programs or inform policy development
- Provides input into the creation and implementation of policies and procedures and ensures that they are understood and followed by the public and employees.
- Provides input and assists with creation of public service policies, including circulation, collections, and membership.
Staff management (incl. supervision, employee development for direct reports)
- Selects, trains, schedules, supervises, evaluates and disciplines all public service staff at the location, seeking feedback and advice from other department leads as appropriate.
- Provides orientation to and is responsible for overall supervision for location volunteers and co-op students.
Other duties as required.
- Answers member questions in person, by telephone or by internet:
- General inquiries.
- Advanced reference queries including assisting library members in locating and accessing information resources, answering their questions, and providing guidance on research, to support member information needs. Acts as a resource to location staff for advanced questions.
- Advanced Readers Advisory including assisting members to find resources using the library catalogue, electronic databases, microfilm equipment and the internet and making recommendations to patrons regarding leisure reading, viewing and listening material. Acts as a resource to location staff for advanced questions.
- Instruct members in the use of computers and/or software for users with all skill levels.
What You Bring
To be qualified for and successful in the role, you should have:
Required:
- Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or Master of Information Studies
- Six (6) years experience working in a public library at a professional level
- Two (2) years experience working in a leadership capacity in a library setting
- Valid G-Class Driver’s license and access to vehicle
- Demonstrated advanced proficiency with task-specific software (Microsoft 365/Office and virtual meeting software)
- Understands principles and practices of developing teams, motivating employees and managing in a team environment.
- Has an inclusive and empathetic approach and a service-oriented mindset.
- Has excellent customer service and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals including employees, agencies, external contacts, public and including the ability to explain complex technology to non-technical users.
- Able to handle changes in priorities, work on diverse tasks, and adapt to evolving organizational needs, exhibiting flexibility, creativity, and initiative.
- Well-organized, with a strong aptitude for attention to detail, time management and project management.
- Ability to perform both self-directed work and to work collaboratively in a team.
- Exercises exceptional judgment, discretion and professional integrity in all matters, especially those involving confidential or sensitive information.
- Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions on sensitive, confidential issues; resolves issues where appropriate, and escalates when necessary.
- A passion for supporting the diverse interests and needs of the Cambridge community.
Preferred:
- Proficiency with library technologies, including integrated library systems (ILS) and digital resources.

Salary Range: $103,081 - $120,590 annum (Level 12 in our salary grid).
Hours: This is a full-time permanent position, 35 hours in a weekly period.
Work Schedule: Starting, Monday – Friday 9:30 am - 5:30 pm. This is dependent on the scheduling needs of the new location. You may be required to work additional hours or to adjust your schedule to fulfil your responsibilities related to events occurring outside of the regular work week. Evening and weekend work may be required.
