
Job Summary
The Librarian: Reference and Information Literacy, Copyright and Education provides reference/information services across all disciplines as a members of the Library’s reference team. The librarian also serves as the University’s copyright compliance officer, oversees the Curriculum Resource Centre, and is the primary liaison with the University’s School of Education.
Key Areas of Accountability
Research Support and Information Literacy
- Provides reference and information services to students, faculty, staff and community users at various service points as scheduled, by appointment, both in-person and online.
- Develops a working familiarity with the library’s information resources, and the University’s curricular and research needs across all disciplines.
- Develops and manages a program of information literacy including individual/group skills, undergraduate and graduate research credit courses, and distributed learning.
- Provides instruction to faculty and students in information literacy/research strategies with a view to equipping participants and furthering the University’s pedagogical goals. Instruction may be presented both in-person, online, or hybrid.
- Develops tutorials and research guides for library resources and services. Participates in library orientation tours and program or course level library instruction programs.
- Using and/or developing new applications of technology to support library programming and services.
- Acts as part of the reference team to communicate with and serve the needs of all disciplines, with particular responsibilities for assigned liaison departments and programs.
- Initiates and maintains contact with the University’s entire teaching faculty to foster partnerships to anticipate and support their research and curricular needs.
- Informs faculty of relevant services and resources; solicit and discusses collection needs with faculty.
- Works collaboratively with faculty and relevant staff to develop and encourage participation in information literacy and open access programs.
- Contributes to the ongoing development and evaluation of library collections, in all formats.
- Initiates and participates in needs assessment as well as in the design, implementation, and evaluation of services offered by the library.
Copyright
- Identifies materials which may be covered under current copyright legislation of the Library’s existing licenses.
- Determines the copyright holder for a given item (this may be a publisher, author, vendor or some other representative).
- Obtains copyright permissions and digital clearances from publishers or copyright holders as needed.
- Produces a digitized version of the requested material once copyright clearances have been received.
- Tracks all details of permission requests to enable the University to respond appropriately to potential interrogatories or other legal requests for this information.
- Maintains contact database and financial activity as related to copyright clearance. Produce analytical reports related to copyright clearance.
- Assists faculty and staff with copyright and licensing queries for teaching and research needs. Provide copyright-related user education.
- Creates and/or maintains resources on copyright and related legal issues including in print materials, websites, LibGuides, and various social media outlets.
- Assists other university stakeholders (ex. the university bookstore) with copyright permissions as needed.
Education
- Acts as primary liaison librarian to the School of Education, providing assistance with:
- Specialized orientation, information literacy, and research support sessions, and both the undergraduate and graduate level.
- Specialized research assistance in advanced databases, grey literature, and other research tools for both Education students, faculty and community users
- Resourcing School of Education initiatives, including Indigenization initiatives.
- Provides leadership, coordinates, and manages the Harro van Brummelen Curriculum Resource Centre:
- Responsible for overseeing all CRC functions.
- Responsible for managing Curriculum and Project Curriculum funds.
- Responsible for selection, acquisition, organization, and weeding of materials housed in the CRC.
- Responsible for monitoring CRC expenditures for materials, supplies, etc.
- Responsible to liaise with internal/external educational units affecting CRC collections and operations, especially TWU’s School of Education
- Responsible for maintaining an understanding of the B.Ed and graduate Education program of the University.
- Responsible for providing information, point of contact, and instruction to users of the CRC.
- Responsible for demonstrating knowledge of emerging electronic information sources.

- Serves on library / university committees as directed by the University Librarian.
- Pursues relevant professional development opportunities.
The Person
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge and experience in providing reference services in both face-to-face and electronic mediums.
- Excellent database, Internet and print reference research skills. Familiarity with product of major database vendors (ex. EBSCO, Ovid, and Proquest) an asset.
- Knowledge and experience in planning, developing, managing, and assessing information literacy programs.
- Experience in teaching information literacy and research design courses, workshops, and individual sessions.
- Knowledge of library issues, practices, etc. related to publishing monographs and serials in both print and electronic format, especially in relation to the Copyright Act, fair dealing guidelines and TWU’s copyright guidelines. Ability to communicate said guidelines to faculty and staff.
- Familiarity of copyright clearance procedures and methodology.
- Familiarity with specialized resources and literature in Education and related fields is highly desirable.
- Competence with computer applications generally used in a business environment, such as MS Office.

- Evening and weekend work may be necessary.

Standards & Requirements
Education: ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent)
Experience: 2 – 3 years’ experience in an academic library required. Experience in an education library or curriculum resource centre highly desirable.
