The work of Librarian I’s focuses on developing and delivering inclusive and inspiring services for Richmond’s diverse community.
Description of Position
The Librarian I is an experienced professional who, in conjunction with the Head of Ironwood Library, is responsible for various tasks including community outreach, collection development, programming, digital literacy services, reference services, and readers’ advisory services. They may oversee non-professional staff and ensure the upkeep of library premises.
The successful candidate will operate with considerable independence, following established guidelines. Continuous learning is essential, including keeping up with digital technologies and acquiring new skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs reference duties by providing information and assistance to the public regarding library materials, procedures, regulations, and resources; provides readers’ advisory services to adults, teens, children, and families.
- Actively walks the floor and offers proactive customer service.
- Engages with library members to develop programs and collections that meet changing customer needs.
- Actively promotes collections and services to users; evaluates collections and makes purchase recommendations for current and new collections in physical and digital formats; evaluates the effectiveness of services and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Under direction, plans, organizes, and participates in library programs, outreach, and projects, and presents and publicizes services through school visits, book talks, community events, and other programs to various groups.
- Evaluates and selects appropriate electronic resources to be included on the library’s website.
- Performs duties related to developing and delivering training modules for both staff and the public on the Internet and various electronic resources.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of librarianship, library organization, procedures, and services.
- Ability to work in a high-paced and innovative library environment with minimal supervision.
- Skill in engaging with the community to develop and promote library services, programming, and collections.
- Experience in program planning and delivery.
- Sound knowledge of the Internet, digital technologies, and electronic resources.
- Strong interest and knowledge in developing library services, particularly digital services.
- Demonstrated experience and strong skills in customer service.
- Good interpersonal skills for effective communication with the public and colleagues.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changes in the work environment.
- Ability to work independently and willingness to work evenings and weekends.

Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA Accredited program, or equivalent

Rate of Pay
- $40.02 - $47.11 per hour
Schedule
Re-assignments of weekly schedule or daily shift and/or location will take place as operational needs dictate. The initial schedule is as follows:
Sunday 9:45am-5:15pm
Monday 1:45pm-9:15pm
Tuesday 1:45pm-9:15pm
Wednesday 10:00am-5:30pm
Thursday 8:45am-4:15pm
Friday and Saturday Rest
